FWD Life Insurance Corporation (FWD) has partnered with the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) to introduce The One for pet lovers, a life insurance innovation that helps pet owners plan for their petsâ care when theyâre gone â while supporting animal welfare initiatives nationwide.
This partnership addresses a growing concern: as of 2019, an estimated 12 million stray dogs and cats in the Philippines suffer from abandonment and neglect. Many of these cases stem from unprepared pet ownership or an ownerâs sudden passing. PAWS currently houses 248 rescues, and with the help of local government units (LGUs), has provided free spay and neuter services to 1,925 cats and dogs owned by indigent familiesâunderscoring the urgent need for responsible planning.
Estate planning isnât just for peopleâitâs for pets too. FWDâs The One for pet lovers offers a meaningful way to secure a petâs future. By taking steps such as choosing a trusted guardian who will be the beneficiary to a life insurance policy, leaving clear care instructions, and including pets in a will, owners can ensure their pets are cared for like they wanted even when theyâre no longer around.
At a recent event at the PAWS Shelter, FWD highlighted that owning a pet is a lifelong responsibility similar to raising a child who is dependent on their primary caregiver. However, pets cannot inherit money or property, or be beneficiaries to a life insurance, so their well-being depends on the arrangements owners make. The One for pet lovers helps bridge this gap by ensuring pet guardians are financially equipped to care for pets should owners pass.
âAt FWD, we believe nation-building starts with financial inclusion and education âhelping people understand the many ways insurance can work for them,â said Gavin Lai, FWD Chief Marketing and Digital Commerce Officer. âThe One for pet lovers reflects our commitment by showing that protection isnât just for people â itâs for everything that matters to them, including pets. Itâs about making insurance accessible, affordable, and meaningful.â
For every policy purchased, a portion is donated to PAWS to support its Animal Rehabilitation Center operations, medical care, and efforts against animal cruelty.
âPAWS survives on donations, thatâs why we are very grateful for companies like FWD for choosing to support us. Thank you for helping us assist more animals,â said Sharon Yap, PAWS Education and Campaigns Officer. âFinancial responsibility is key to responsible pet ownership, and initiatives like this help ensure pets are cared for even when life takes unexpected turns.â
