Not all hotdogs are created equal – some brands just tastes better!

PICNIC came as a big surprise to us just a couple of years back. I still remember the day I first picked up a pack from the supermarket chiller thinking – no, I was more hoping and praying that the kids will like the taste.

When it comes to hotdogs, we were a one-brand type of family for a very, very long time. But that particular month, we were kinda in the mood for experimenting on other grocery food items – from snack items to frozen delis. The first brand of hotdog that I took home was a disaster – they didn’t like it. And so the PICNIC hotdog inside my grocery bag is about to go dive in real hot water.

To cut the story short, PICNIC became our favorite hotdog brand ever since! They loved it!

What’s a Hotdog?

Just a quick background info, hotdogs are actually sausages. Well historically they are first popularly known as “Frankfurters” named after the place where sausages have originated – Frankfurt, Germany. And in other parts of Germany, it’s called a “Weiner.”

The term hotdog was coined to the sausage as early as 1800s when suspicion of the use of dog meat became trending topic at that time, the consumption of dog meat was very common in Germany during those days.

In the US, sausages or the hotdog quickly became a staple to various sports events and fairs especially during baseball games as early as the start of the 1900s.

Here in the Philippines, no PICNICS or parties (especially for kids) can go without a hotdog on the table – even our spaghettis are loaded with it. It’s a favorite for breakfast paired with sinangag (fried rice) and egg or for merienda (snack) as a sandwich. I will bet the contents of my wallet today that you’ve had hotdog as baon in school when you were young.

Well aside from being affordable and easy to prepare, it also tastes good and very satisfying.

Mekeni Food Corporation

We love PICNIC because of the taste. But I appreciated it more after learning that it’s a brand under the Mekeni Food Corporation – the maker of our favorite tocino and longanisa!

Founded as a backyard business way back in 1986, it grew into a full-blown enterprise that not even the violent eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991 was able to hinder.

Mekeni has under its belt the following achievements:

  • The first ISO 22000 certified Meat Processing Plant in Asia
  • The first ISO 22000 certified Food Processing Plant in the Philippines
  • The second ISO 22000 certified Meat Processing Plant in the world

PICNIC Hotdogs

There are two types of PICNIC Hotdogs that are always on our grocery list – the Red Hotdog and the Cheesy Brown Hotdog.

PICNIC RED HOTDOG

We love the Mekeni Picnic Red Hotdog for its strong meaty taste and aroma. We use it in our spaghetti, sopas, menudo, sandwich or just plain pan fried. It’s available 250g, 500g, 1kg and 2.5kg packs.

PICNIC CHEESY BROWN HOTDOG

Now what’s better than a PICNIC Hotdog? A PICNIC Hotdog with cheese! The kids love this one the most! It’s like magic, cook it in 5 to 10 minutes and watch it disappear in 5 to 10 seconds! It’s also available in 250g, 500g, 1kg and 2.5kg packs.

A recent discovery of ours from the same company is the Mekeni GOLite Yogurt Sausage. Same meaty taste but so much healthier with 25% less of the fat and zero artificial coloring! It’s also easier to prepare, just pour hot water, cover and wait for 3 minutes and it’s now ready to eat.

The Mekeni PICNIC Red Hotdog, Chezzy Brown Hotdog and GOLite Yogurt Sausage are available in all leading supermarkets, wet markets, online stores, and Mekeni’s Home2Home delivery.
