Pizza is probably one of the most popular food in the world!

The word Pizza refers to an oven-baked flat bread dish typically topped with tomato sauce, cheese and various toppings.  Basic pizza preparation may be classified into two types – Thick Crust or Thin Crust.  Personally, I prefer thin crust over thick because it’s more fun to eat but thick crust variety are of course more satisfying.

Here are some fun historical facts about pizza that all pizza lovers like meshould know :

  • Pizza became popular in Naples, Italy a thousand years ago.  It was said to have originated from the traditional focaccia bread.
  • Pizza was a peasant food designed to be eaten without utensils and with the main purpose of using any available produce to get rid of or recycle left-over food.
  • Tomatoes were once believed to be poisonous.  It was not until the 1600s that European started eating and using tomatoes on their dishes.  The people from Naples, Italy were the ones who first used tomatoes on their focaccia breads and eventually on pizzas.
  • The world’s first pizzeria opened in 1830 and it was called Port’Alba.
  • Pizza became truly popular right after World War II when servicemen returned to Italy and started opening pizzerias and the rave about the ‘great italian dish’ started.
  • October was designated as the National Pizza Month in the US.
  • Filipinos love pizza!
