Steering Through the Storm: How Compassion Keeps Our Drivers Moving

In the middle of our daily hustle, it’s easy to forget that the people who get us to our destinations—our jeepney and tricycle drivers—are often the ones struggling most to reach their own. Between the rising cost of fuel and the skyrocketing price of basic groceries, many of our local transport workers are facing an uphill battle just to keep food on the table.

But yesterday, a powerful reminder of community and “habag” (compassion) took center stage in Pandacan.

Compassion in Action: The “Sa Harap ng Hirap… Habag” Initiative

On April 20, 2026, Caritas Manila opened its doors to 176 members of the Pandacan Drivers Association (PANDASS) and the Pandacan Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association (PATODA). Through the initiative “Sa Harap ng Hirap… Habag,” each driver received ₱2,000 worth of gift certificates designed to cover essential food and household expenses.

This wasn’t just a simple handout; it was a strategic response to a global crisis hitting home. With international conflicts driving up commodity prices, those who rely on the road for their livelihood are often the first to feel the squeeze.

Why Charity Matters More During a Crisis

Charity is often seen as a grand gesture, but its true power lies in its timing and tangibility. Through its disaster response program, Damayan, Caritas Manila proves that effective advocacy isn’t just about speaking up—it’s about showing up.

  • Immediate Relief: In a crisis, speed is everything. Providing gift certificates allows families to address their specific, most urgent needs immediately.
  • Restoring Dignity: By partnering with associations like PANDASS and PATODA, the program honors the hard work of these drivers, acknowledging their role as the backbone of our local economy.
  • Lived Compassion: More than the monetary value, these initiatives serve as a “tangible sign of hope.” It tells our vulnerable sectors that they aren’t walking this difficult path alone.

The Power of the Collective

The mission of Caritas Manila is a beautiful example of what happens when faith meets action. However, the reach of the Damayan program is fueled by one thing: the generosity of people like you.

To extend this lifeline to more families and more communities, the support of donors is vital. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps ensure that when the next economic storm hits, our neighbors have a roof of support over their heads.

Whether through donations or simply spreading the word, your involvement ensures that “Habag” remains more than just a word—it becomes a reality for those who need it most.
