Ang MUSEO: Is Your Favorite Local Museum the Best in the Country?

There is a specific kind of quiet you only find inside a museum—a hum of history that feels both ancient and alive. But behind that silence is a whirlwind of noise: the tireless work of curators, the precision of restorers, and the passion of local government units keeping regional stories from fading into obscurity.

This week, at a milestone media launch that felt more like a family reunion of heritage lovers, the Museum Foundation of the Philippines, Inc. (MFPI) officially turned the spotlight on these behind-the-scenes heroes. In celebration of their 40th Anniversary, they’ve launched Ang MUSEO: Gawad ng Museum Foundation of the Philippines.

It isn’t just another trophy for the shelf; it is the first-ever national recognition program in the Philippines dedicated solely to honoring excellence in cultural preservation and education.

A Ruby Milestone: 40 Years of Stewardship

To understand why Ang MUSEO matters, you have to look at the giant whose shoulders it stands on. Founded in 1986 as the “Friends of the National Museum,” the MFPI has spent four decades proving that heritage isn’t a luxury—it’s a right.

Their track record is a “Greatest Hits” of Philippine cultural advocacy:

  • The Law-Makers: They successfully fought for the National Museum Act of 1998, giving the National Museum the autonomy it deserves.
  • The Restorers: From funding the restoration of Juan Luna’s iconic La Bulaqueña to acquiring rare Tagbanua and Maranao artifacts, they keep our visual history intact.
  • The Trendsetters: They birthed the MaArte Fair in 2009, turning traditional crafts into a high-fashion staple, and continue to support Art in the Park.

Why “Ang MUSEO” is the Project We Need Right Now

“It’s not just about preserving the artifact; it’s about preserving our identity,” MFPI President Danny Jacinto shared during the roundtable.

After the challenges of the last few years, our cultural spaces are evolving. We aren’t just looking at dusty paintings anymore; we are looking for vibrant spaces of learning. Ang MUSEO is designed to elevate the standards of these spaces, ensuring that a small municipal museum in Mindanao or a university gallery in Luzon is held to the same prestigious ICOM-inspired standards as the giants in Manila.

As Executive Director Tanya Pico beautifully put it, the awards are driven by a “Shared Love.” It’s a call to the “unsung regional stewards” to step into the light.

How to Join the Movement

Do you know a museum that changed the way you see the Philippines? Or a museum worker who treats every artifact like a family heirloom?

The official call for entries is NOW OPEN and runs from March 15 to May 15, 2026. Whether it’s a government-run institution, a private collection, or a university museum that has remained operational since 2019, the MFPI wants to hear their story.

The winners will be revealed in a grand ceremony in October 2026, marking a new era where we finally celebrate the people who keep the Filipino story alive.

“Heritage belongs to every Filipino.” Let’s make sure those who protect it know we’re watching—and we’re grateful.
