Reviewed by Movie Marker’s Dion Wyn as “a heart-warming experience full of wonder” and by Cinapse’s Ed Travis as “brimming with personality, revealing of a culture, and comes from the heart,” The Fabulous Filipino Brothers is the directorial debut of Fil-Am actor, writer, producer, and poet Dante Basco.
Director Dante Basco is known for his role as young Rufio, the Leader of the Lost Boys in Steven Spielberg’s Hook and notably known for his voice acting roles as Prince Zuko in Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender and Jake Long in Disney Channel’s American Dragon.
“Being a part of this industry for over 30 years, I would say that this is the perfect time to represent the Asian community. We are now entering this new era of storytelling with a new media so we have to create more stories that are told from our own Asian perspective. We put a lot of heart into the preparation of this film and it feels like I am sharing my family with the whole world so I hope the people will be able to enjoy it,” Director Dante Basco expressed.
Shot in Manila and Northern California, the film follows Director Dante with his real-life brothers Derek, Dionysio, and Darion Basco in four unique vignettes that would lead to a series of misadventures, cockfights, and a controversial Filipino wedding.
As an added treat for Filipino viewers, Solenn Heussaff and Tirso Cruz III have special cameos in the film, which features a wonderfully mixed Asian cast plus songs from Filipino R&B icon JayR, online celebrity singer AJ Rafael, and rising hip hop maven Ruby Ibarra.
In a special roundtable interview, we asked Director Dante Basco about the chance of Filipino talents and films taking a top spot in the global entertainment scene and what would it take for that to happen. and he said,
“It all comes down to GREAT STORIES, we gotta keep making movies, keep making media… make things, make something cool with a great story, people will find you when you make great stories. Filipinos are being a part of this whole movement that’s going on, it’s coming and maybe sooner than you know.”
