Tegan didn’t need a big statement to introduce herself. Two words did the job: choose yourself.
“I choose me” is Tegan’s debut single, and it says exactly what the title promises. The song is built around a specific kind of erosion, the slow wearing-down that happens when you spend too long shaping yourself around someone else’s expectations, and whatever’s left of you once you finally stop.
That contradiction is kind of Tegan’s whole thing. She’s Hawaii-born, fifth-generation Japanese American, and started performing at 12 as one half of a ukulele duo after passing a Hawaii talent audition in 2015. Three years later, at 15, she became the youngest artist ever to perform at Fuji Rock Festival. Then she stepped away from music entirely, before returning in 2024 through a Thailand-based audition show, and now, at 23, she’s making her solo debut through Japanese label avex. That’s a longer road than most debut artists have walked by the time they release a first single, and “I choose me” sounds like it’s carrying all of it.
Her voice is the other half of the contradiction. Tegan looks delicate, almost doll-like, the kind of presence people describe as instantly endearing. Then she opens her mouth, and out comes something low, husky and unexpectedly weighty, a voice that doesn’t match the first impression at all. “I choose me” leans directly into that gap: Tegan’s vocal carries the refrain without ever needing to raise its volume to make the point land, calm, not loud, and somehow more convincing because of it.
The music video runs the same idea further, following a doll-like figure caught between how she’s perceived from the outside and what she’s actually feeling underneath, staged in a retro-modern world built around quiet individuality and a soft, simmering rebellion rather than anything overt.
The song has already had a live test run. At Tegan’s debut showcase, industry and media attendees responded strongly to her voice, her stage presence, and her personality in equal measure, a striking early reaction for an artist most of the room was meeting for the very first time.
