Tap, Scan, Ride: No Beep Card? No Problem! LRT-2 Now Accepts Bank Cards and GCash

LRT-2

Picture this: You’re rushing to catch the next train, your hands are full, and you realize your transit card is out of load. We’ve all been there, and let’s be honest—lining up at the ticketing booth is the last thing you want to do during rush hour.

Well, city dwellers, daily travel just got a massive lifestyle upgrade.

Commuters on Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) can officially skip the ticket lines and breeze through the turnstiles. The country has just launched its very first rail-based automated fare collection system that lets you pay using what’s already in your wallet or phone. You can now simply tap your Visa or Mastercard (debit, credit, or prepaid), use NFC-enabled mobile wallets like Google Pay, or scan a GCash QR code to pay for your ride.

Seamless City Living

This game-changing initiative is powered by Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation (RCBC) in partnership with Visa, the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA), and the Department of Transportation (DOTr).

The best part? The system is completely bank-agnostic. You don’t need a specific transit card or a specific bank account. Whether you are using an everyday debit card or your phone’s digital wallet, the goal is all about making urban mobility faster, more inclusive, and effortlessly modern.

“For the first time, commuters can seamlessly use their everyday bank cards, mobile NFC wallets, and QR payments in one interoperable transit ecosystem,” says Lito Villanueva, RCBC Executive Vice President and Chief Innovations and Inclusion Officer. “By making commuting simpler, faster, and more inclusive, we are bringing the Philippines closer to the digital transport systems found in leading global cities.”

Catch the ₱1 Fare Promo!

To celebrate this digital milestone, RCBC is rolling out an exclusive treat for its users. From July 13 to July 31, millions of RCBC Debit and Credit Card holders, as well as MySSS RCBC DiskarTech Debit Card holders, can enjoy the PISO Fare Cashback Promo. It’s the perfect excuse to test out the new tap-and-ride tech while keeping your wallet happy.

With over 58 million passengers riding the LRT-2 every year, this upgrade is set to redefine the metro commuting experience. It follows successful contactless transit projects across MRT-3 and bus systems in Cebu, Mandaue, and Bacolod, proving that the future of Philippine travel is undeniably digital.

Next time you head to the LRT-2 station, leave the cash in your pocket. Just tap, scan, and enjoy the ride!
