DHL’s New Cebu Gateway: Powering Up the Philippines’ Global Trade

DHL

In a significant move that underscores its commitment to the Philippine market, DHL Express has officially opened a new, larger Cebu Gateway. This isn’t just a simple relocation; it’s a strategic upgrade designed to meet the growing demand for logistics services in the Visayas and Mindanao regions.

According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, Eastern Visayas saw a remarkable 45.5% increase in exports in January 2025 compared to the previous year. This surge, along with rising shipment volumes across the central and southern Philippines, prompted DHL to enhance its infrastructure to better serve local businesses and support the country’s economic growth.

A Hub of Innovation and Efficiency

Located at the Mactan Cebu International Airport, the new 3,875-sqm facility is a technological leap forward. It’s built to global standards and designed to streamline every step of the logistics process. With a highly automated sorting system, the gateway can handle an impressive 825 pieces per hour for inbound shipments and 320 pieces per hour for outbound.

The facility also features 100% direct loading positions, which means less time spent on transfers, and cutting-edge security hardware for comprehensive screening of all packages. This ensures both speed and safety, giving customers peace of mind.

In line with DHL’s commitment to sustainability, the new gateway is a model of energy efficiency. It incorporates:

  • Energy-efficient LED lighting and an inverter air conditioning system.
  • High-volume, low-speed fans to optimize airflow.
  • A design that maximizes natural ventilation and skylights to reduce reliance on artificial lighting and cooling.

This not only lowers the facility’s carbon footprint but also demonstrates DHL’s dedication to creating a more sustainable future for logistics.

A Competitive Edge for Businesses

The gatewayโ€™s strategic location provides unparalleled access to both airside and landside areas. As Thilaga Vathy Rajoo, VP for Operations of DHL Express Philippines, puts it, this will “significantly enhance our sorting processes… and is expected to result in earlier courier departure times for deliveries and potentially later pickup times.” For businesses, this means faster and more reliable service, a crucial competitive advantage in today’s fast-paced market.

With daily DHL flights serving Cebu, this expansion allows the company to handle higher shipment volumes while maintaining its fast transit commitments. This move aligns perfectly with the DHL Trade Atlas 2025, which forecasts the Philippines to rank among the top 30 countries for trade growth over the next five years.

By investing in a crucial hub like Cebu, DHL is not just supporting the local economy; it’s also empowering the Philippines’ potential to become a major player in the global market. This commitment to strengthening the country’s trade infrastructure is a powerful statement of confidence in the nation’s future.
