In the Philippines, conversations about mental health are becoming more common, but access to care remains a serious challenge, especially in local communities. While the Philippine Mental Health Act (R.A. 11036) was a major step forward, many still lack the resources and support they need. In response, BingoPlus Foundation, the social development arm of DigiPlus, is taking action. In partnership with Paglaum Mental Health Support Group and Philippine Accessible Disability Services (PADS) Inc., they are launching a pioneering campaign to bring mental health care directly to grassroots communities.
Empowering Local Leaders
The campaign’s core is a two-part training program designed to equip community health workers, teachers, and local barangay leaders with essential mental health skills. The training covers:
- Foundational knowledge on mental health and psychosocial support.
- Practical skills like psychological first aid, active listening, and how to guide people to the right help.
- Culturally sensitive approaches to break down stigma and encourage people to seek help early.
According to the Department of Health, the Philippines has fewer than one mental health worker for every 100,000 people. This initiative aims to bridge that gap by empowering local figures to become the first line of mental health support.
โAs a barangay health worker, I now feel more confident talking to residents about their struggles. Before, I didnโt know what to say. Now I know how to listen and guide them to the right support,โ shared Analisa Patindol, a Barangay Health Worker from Barangay Tingub in Cebu.
Mental Health Awareness Goes Local
Beyond the training, BingoPlus Foundation will launch a series of barangay-level awareness caravans. These interactive sessions, designed to reach up to 100 residents at a time, will focus on well-being, family dynamics, and breaking the stigma around mental health. The goal is to make these conversations a normal part of daily community life.
Cebu and General Santos City were chosen as pilot sites due to the high demand for mental health support in these areas. Following the pilot, the Foundation plans to expand its training and caravans to Metro Manila and other regions, ensuring more Filipinos have access to the care they deserve.
Ms. Angela Camins-Wieneke, Executive Director of BingoPlus Foundation, summed it up perfectly: โThis is how we bring the vision of the Philippine Mental Health Act to life, especially making care community-based, accessible, and a basic right for every Filipino.โ
By building a network of compassionate and skilled community leaders, the BingoPlus Foundation is not just raising awarenessโit’s creating a more resilient and supportive future, one community at a time.
