Iloilo City hosted the 2024 National Dairy Summit (NDS) last October 28 – 30 at the Iloilo Convention Center with the theme: “Advancing DAIRYpreneurship, Innovation, Nutrition, Sustainability, and Food Security.” This event was organized by the Western Visayas Dairy Farmers and Stakeholders Agriventures Inc., in partnership with the National Dairy Authority (NDA), Iloilo City Government, and Iloilo Provincial Government.

The 2024 National Dairy Summit is not only a premier event that showcased the latest innovations, products, and services in the dairy industry but also served as an excellent platform for stakeholders to connect, collaborate, and explore new business opportunities.

The summit welcomed all players in the dairy value chain, including farmers, stakeholders, local government units (LGUS), state universities and colleges (SUCS), processors, suppliers of farm inputs, equipment, and packaging, traders, and dairy partner agencies.

Dairy experts presented in-depth insights on the latest trends and best practices in the dairy industry while key government dignitaries and champions of the dairy sector were invited to grace the opening ceremonies.

Undersecretary for Livestock Deogracias Victor Savellano, representing Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr., emphasized the sector’s growth potential during his keynote address. He cited Western Visayas as a prime example, noting that the region produces 2.2 million liters of milk from 10,615 dairy animals, demonstrating the power of collaboration and innovation.

Meanwhile, NDA Administrator Atty. Marcus Antonius Andaya shared that they aim to increase the country’s milk sufficiency from 1% to 2.5% by 2025, with a long-term goal of reaching 5% by 2028.

He added that the country’s reliance on imported milk presents an opportunity for local growth, urging stakeholders to explore expansion within the industry.

To meet these targets, the NDA plans to expand local dairy herds through aggressive cattle importation and establish best practices to enhance animal productivity and longevity.

The NDA also plans to develop a pilot feed center in Iloilo to ensure a sustainable food supply for local livestock.
