In the wake of Typhoon Crising and the relentless Southwest Monsoon (Habagat), communities across the Philippines have faced significant challenges. Typhoon Crising, while not a super typhoon, brought considerable rainfall and strong winds, exacerbating the effects of the Habagat and leading to widespread flooding and displacement. During such times, the swift response of humanitarian efforts becomes crucial.
Leading the charge in providing immediate relief, Senator Bam Aquino, known for his dedication to public service and youth empowerment, has collaborated with various organizations to establish much-needed soup kitchens in hard-hit areas. Aquino’s commitment to civic engagement extends back to his days as a social entrepreneur and advocate for youth development, making his involvement in these relief efforts a natural extension of his work.
In a remarkable display of community spirit, Kaya Natin Youth chapters in Caloocan, Manila, and Malabon have been working closely with Senator Aquino’s office, ensuring that flood-affected residents receive nourishing hot meals. The Kaya Natin Movement for Good Governance and Ethical Leadership, from which Kaya Natin Youth initiatives stem, is a non-partisan movement that advocates for good governance and ethical leadership, often engaging young people in volunteerism and community service. Their rapid deployment of assistance highlights the power of youth-led initiatives in times of crisis.
Senator Aquino expressed his gratitude, stating, “Maraming salamat po sa ating mga kasama sa Kaya Natin Youth sa para sa kanilang mabilis na pagkilos at maagap na pag-abot ng tulong sa ating mga kababayan na matinding naapektuhan ng Habagat.” (Many thanks to our Kaya Natin Youth companions for their quick action and timely delivery of aid to our countrymen severely affected by the Southwest Monsoon.)
Angat Buhay and Partners Join the Relief Efforts
Further bolstering the relief operations, Angat Buhay, the non-governmental organization (NGO) founded by former Vice President and Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo, has also mobilized its resources. Through its Angat Bayanihan Volunteer Network, Angat Buhay and its local chapters have been actively distributing food packs in rain-affected areas, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to community support.
In Marikina, a city often heavily impacted by monsoons, Angat Buhay, in coordination with Trining’s Kitchen Stories, prepared an impressive 3,500 hot meals for evacuees. These meals are being distributed to families in evacuation centers with the support of Grab Philippines and the City Government of Marikina, showcasing a powerful public-private partnership.
Angat Buhay’s reach extends beyond Marikina, with volunteers distributing food packs to residents of Brgy. San Juan in Taytay, Rizal. Additionally, affiliate groups such as ALERTO (Alliance on Local Emergency Response Team Operations) and U Lead Pilipinas have stepped up, serving hot meals to 131 families across five evacuation sites in Bulacan.
These collective efforts from various organizations, spearheaded by figures like Senator Bam Aquino and the networks established by Angat Buhay, underscore the Filipino spirit of bayanihan – a deep sense of communal unity and cooperation – especially evident when communities face the challenges posed by natural disasters.
