Out of the almost 7,000 song entries from all over the globe, only 10 finalists were selected for this year’s Himig Handog songwriting competition. One of the entries that is currently making waves is Eric De Leon’s “BES” interpreted by the very talented MIGZ HALECO.

Close to being known now as the “Pambansang Bes”, MIGZ or 23 year-old Miguel Haleco said that the simplicity of the song “BES” is connecting to millennials and music lovers from all ages. And I completely agree. It’s actually one of my favorites from all the 10 finalists this year.

I was able to get to know more about the singer behind the song when I joined an exclusive pocket press conference for MIGZ HALECO held last Friday the 13th at Fleur De Lis in Quezon City. The intimate event was organized by his talent management group PPL Entertainment, Inc.

Here are a couple of things that I learned about this very talented artist that could actually make him a BES to all OPM fans:

1. MIGZ traded video games for Music

It was actually his dad’s idea to buy him his first guitar to introduce an alternative to his video games. He was getting hooked on his games a little too much, and the guitar was just supposed to be a tool to break the habit but it turned out to be something more. Learning to play the guitar was the start of his passion for singing and writing music – he now has over four dozen original songs already (published and unpublished). He’s coming out with an album very soon, some of his originals will be featured there.

2. MIGZ is all about Music

During the pocket presscon, someone asked Migz if he’ll be willing to do acting as well. He answered: “I might, but not right now”. Migz’s commitment right now lies on getting his music out to people. He’s trying all the avenues, like joining the talent competitions “Talentadong Pinoy” and “Pilipinas Got Talent” which didn’t turn out okay as he was hoping – but like what the old saying goes, there’s a time for everything and MIGZ time is now! OPM will soon get a taste of Migz pop alternative dish.

3. MIGZ is true BES material

He was born on September 9, 1994 – the Year of the Dog, according to the Chinese horoscope. Apparently, music is in his stars because some of the famous musician born under the same sign are Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, Madonna and Kelly Clarkson.

He is also a virgo, and is characterized as: “a person with a fantastic eye for detail and enjoys order, precision and efficiency in all things. While sometimes he is told to be cold and unpredictable, a Virgo is also sensitive, practical and loyal.” A true BES material!

BES MIGZ will be competing in Himig Handog 2017 with some of today’s most talented OPM artists like Jake Zyrus, Inigo Pascual, Morisette, Jona, Kyla, Jason Dy, Unit 406, Kaye Cal, Moira and Janella Salvador.

Best Song gets the grand prize of 1 million Pesos. Runners-up will get 500,000 Pesos (2nd place), 200,000 Pesos (3rd place), 150,000 Pesos (4th place), and 100,000 Pesos (5th place).

Special awards will be given to MOR’s Choice, Star Music Listeners Choice, and One Music PH Choice for Favorite Interpreter, each with 50,000 Pesos cash prize. Another special award goes to TFC’s Global Choice for Favorite Song with $2,000 take home money. The MYX Best Music Video will be awarded with a 50,000 Pesos cash reward.

To VOTE for MIGZ HALECO’s BES text MORHHSONG2 to 2366 – you can vote up to 5 times every day.

Here’s another thing about Migz that you should know about, we all have verbal tics right? Words that we unconsciously and excessively use in conversations. I have 1 or 2 of them, Migz’s is the word “actually” – it’s nothing to be ashamed of. 🙂 Watch the interview vid below and count the number of times he mentioned the word “actually”, go to my YouTube channel and write down your tally on the comment section of the video. I’ll send one lucky commenter (who guessed it right) a special token (via raffle) for his effort right after the Himig Handog 2017 Finals event. 🙂
