We knew that they were coming back, 20 years of waiting is now over and INDEPENDENCE DAY RESURGENCE is here!
Saw it last night at the IMAX Theater of SM Mall of Asia, same time as the US Premiere – the 20th Century Fox released film is like a reunion of sorts for all the remaining cast and characters of the 1996 blockbuster film. For those who are too young to remember, this movie is well-known for that clip that shows a huge cylindrical spaceship blowing up the Whitehouse.
Anyway, old meets new in Resurgence as Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Judd Hirsch, Randy Quaid, Brent Spiner and Vivica Fox (minus Will Smith) returns to meet the new cast Liam Hemsworth, Maika Monroe, Jessie Usher, Ryan Cartwright, Angelababy (Angela Yeung Wing) Charlotte Gainsbourg as Dr. Catherine Marceux, Sela Ward as President Lanford and William Fichtner as President/General Adams.
Did I mention that Angelababy is part of the cast! Her being part of the film is enough reason for me to watch this – never mind the acting part or the story! <hehehe>
As promised, there’s a lot of alien action in this film. Not really much into the futuristic earth thing, but you see it can’t be helped because the last conflict in 1996 left earth with some alien future tech and 20 years is such a long time for it not to be exploited. Fair enough. 🙂
There’s also a lot of similarities with the original film, like I said, it’s a reunion of sorts. First part is best viewed in 3D – wished that they’ve utilized more of the first-person 3D experience during the alien battles for a more immersive experience, specially during that last “mama alien dive” – will not go into more details so as not to spoil it for those who haven’t seen it yet.
Well here’s a give away – you’re going to have more than one alien species here in Independence Day Resurgence!
You’ll also find that IDResurgence has some similarities with Ridley Scott’s ALIENS franchise.
The downside with this movie is that you’ll need to watch the first film (Independence Day 1996) to best appreciate it! Some humor and stories will be based on the 1996 movie and you might not get it if you have not watched the first film yet. But there’s still time for all Pinoy viewers, INDEPENDENCE DAY RESURGENCE will be out in theaters on June 22 (Wednesday), so better get a copy of the original film before watching this.
Oh, and there’s going to be an Independence Day Part Three – as suggested in the film itself.
Special THANKS to 20th Century Fox Philippines, PageOne.PH and Coms360!
