Some of the biggest names in the OPM Rock scene meets the most talented people in Philippine theater as they converge to launch the Globe Iconic store with a grand local production of Greenday’s American Idiot the Musical on June 24 to July 9.
The Globe Iconic Store is Globe Telecoms world-class flagship store in BGC that has two separate stores opening on opposite buildings connected by a pioneering glass bridge. This bridge, flanked by two massive LED screens on each side can be converted into a performance space catering to an audience below. This structure is dynamic and innovative and when merged it becomes an open-air stage with limitless possibilities.
With this engineering possibility came an idea. An idea that soon became a corporate decision and is now to become a reality that will start in June! GLOBE IS NOW OFFICIALLY A SHOW PRODUCER!
Their very first venture is in collaboration with 9 Works Theatrical with the exclusively licensed Philippine production of the hit Berkeley-Broadway rock musical Greenday’s American Idiot written for stage by Billy Joe Armstrong. It won two Tony Awards in 2010 and a Grammy in 2011.
The Philippine production is led by producers Joe Caliro (for Globe) and Santi Santamaria (for 9 Works) and directed by Robbie Guevarra.
All three were present during the grand media cast presentation of Greenday’s American Idiot held at Hard Rock Cafe Makati last Tuesday.
“Green Day’s American Idiot is the perfect play to launch the Globe Iconic Store. With the world class entertainment venue we can provide and its unique location, American Idiot’s dynamic story can fully utilize the facility and deliver an immersive theatrical experience like no other. But more importantly we are doing this to be a medium of awareness of the youth today, and bring a valuable lesson of what today’s generation should avoid such as drugs, peer pressure, teen pregnancy and more.” – says Globe Retail Transformation and Stores management Head, Joe Caliro.
According to Joe and Santi, this is the first time a production this big will be staged outside the normal indoor theater environment. It’s like an outdoor concert but it’s not, and it’s going to be very expensive and challenging to produce (technically).
The Philippine cast is led by rockers Jason Fernandez of Rivermaya (as Johnny), Miggy Chavez of Chicosci (as Will), Basti Artadi of Wolfgang (as the sinister St. Jimmy) and Norby David of Rivermaya.
Rounding up the cast are great musical talents and Philippine theater’s best of the best led by Nel Gomez (Grease, The Glass Menagerie, Romeo & Juliet), Yanah Laurel (Aliw Award Nominee for Best Actress in a Musical), Alex Godinez (High School Musical, Grease), Ela Lisondra (Miss Saigon), Ariel Reonal (Miss Saigon), Gian Gloria (Marco Polo), Mako Alonzo (La Cage aux Folles, Rivalry), Sarah Facuri (Grease, No Filter), Chesko Rodriguez (La Cage aux Folles), Shalee Vicencio (Camp Rock, Alice In Wonderland), Mark Tayag (Rent, The Wedding Singer, Grease), Kendrick Ibasco (Pinocchio, Rivalry) and Kai Atienza (GMA Artist Center).
American Idiot follows the journey of three young men as they face the harsh realities of the world around them – a symbolic post-9/11 America – where they must face the challenges of love, teen pregnancy, war, drugs, and loss. The musical is set to the incredibly biting and riveting music of Green Day that features a surprisingly profound understanding of the pains and frustrations of today’s youth.
The cast performed live some of the songs in the musical, here’s a video of their presentation.. enjoy:
