Today – April 22 is EARTH DAY!
Earth Day is a global celebration and movement that started in the US way back in 1970 with the leadership of former US Senator Gaylord Nelson who witnessed the ravages of the 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. 45 years later and over 5,000 Earth Day inspired environmental groups in 184 countries including the Philippines, the fight for a clean environment continues in a climate of increasing urgency, as the ravages of climate change become more manifest every day.
One of the main proponent of the Earth Day celebration here in the Philippines is the SM Supermall through SM CARES.
SM Cares is a division of SM Foundation Inc., the Corporate Social Responsibility arm of SM Prime Holdings, Inc. It was launched in 2004 to organize the sustainability efforts of the corporation into a comprehensive program that tackles a wide range of initiatives: From giving a voice to the under-represented sectors of our society, to preserving the environment and to creating innovative but sustainable avenues of growth.
Eight years ago, SM City Fairview started a sustainability program called Trash to Cash Recycling Market. The program makes SM the first mall in the country to hold such kind of green fair. Four years after its launch, it earned for SM the “Friend of Biodiversity” award from the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity.
The old adage of environmental conservation, ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’ or otherwise known as the “3 Rs” is as relevant as when the day it was created. It is still the simplest and most effective environmental act that can really make a big difference in the world. However, it is only as effective as the systems that supports it. And this is where national policies, cause-oriented groups and corporate entities comes in.
This Earth Day, April 22, all 50 SM malls nationwide will open its grounds for its Trash to Cash Recycling Market! I visited two of their malls today. Here’s what the Trash To Cash program looks like at the SM Mall of Asia and SM City North Edsa:
The SM Mall of Asia installation is located at Block 12 at the corner of Sunset Avenue and Ocean Drive, just behind the SM Hypermarket area.
The SM City North EDSA installation is located near the ‘water falls’ area.
On regular days, SM’s Trash to Cash Recycling Market is held every first Friday and Saturday of every month, from 10AM to 2PM, at the mall open parking area. The mall offers to exchange cash for recyclable trash materials like papers, cartons, plastics, glass bottles, aluminum and tin cans, and polystyrene. These, in turn, are turned over for recycling. The event also involves the participation of mall tenants, the surrounding community of each mall, and the local government.
SM’s Earth Day celebration is in partnership with the Earth Day Network Philippines (EDNP) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
