Well it felt like going back to nursing college all over again but during the tour, all you’ll ever hear me say is “We’ve never had that in our school…”
The tour started for me a day before the actual event browsing the net for the location of DE LA SALLE HEALTH SCIENCES INSTITUTE (DLSHSI) in Dasmarinas, Cavite. Located along Gov. D. Mangubat Avenue near Aguinaldo Highway, DLSHSI is a full-complemental medical and health allied institution that provides holistic and premium health professions education, health care, and research services.
An affiliate of the De La Salle Philippines and the worldwide network of Lasallian schools, DLSHSI is currently being managed by Bro. Gus Boquer, FSC, EdD who is its President and Chancellor.
Last Wednesday, together with some online media friends we went on a tour inside the huge DLSHSI compound. We were greeted by Ms. Haydee Abayan Sy, the director for Institutional Marketing Communications of DLSHSI and the current Vice Chancellor of the Institute Dr. Charles Yu who gave us an overview of what to expect at DLSHSI. He summed up the whole facility in three words – ACADEMICS, HOSPITAL and RESEARCH.
Dr. Charles Yu is a highly acclaimed expert in the research of Tuberculosis and was appointed as a member of the Steering Committee of the International Standards for TB Care (ISTC) and heads the Asian Pacific Society of Respirology (APSR) Assembly on Tuberculosis. The doctor was also named as Outstanding Filipino Physician in 2009 along with two other DLSHSI alumni.
The first part of our tour was at the DLSHSI colleges. The institute has been offering medical and health allied programs through its four colleges – College of Medicine, College of Rehabilitation Sciences (BS Physical Therapy, BS Occupational Therapy), College of Nursing and School of Midwifery (BS Nursing, Midwifery), and the College of Medical Radiation Technology. Also, the institute recently introduced a two-year intensive trimestral Bachelor’s Degree Program in Biochemisty. A first in the country, the latest offering aims to shorten the duration of college years for medicine students by two years.
DLSHSI is also the first information-technology based medical school in the country. It features a clinical skills and plastination laboratories, air-conditioned auditorium classrooms, state-of-the-art audiovisual facilities, a health informatics lab with 320 computer terminals to be used as a virtual laboratory and practical evidence-based medicine applications.
The best part of the DLSHSI academic program is its mission of having 1 scholar for every 5 regular students. Which translates to 20% of the institute’s student population being supported by a scholarship grant. Currently, DLSHSI has already achieved its 1:5 scholarship mission making it the biggest scholarship program for medicine in the Philippines.
The De La Salle University Medical Center (DLSUMC) is the largest tertiary hospital in Region IV-A and the first ISO 9001 certified hospital in the Philippines, recognized as a ‘Center For Safety’ by the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) and a Manuel L Quezon Service Excellence Awardee.
The medical center is a 250-bed hospital that serves around 23,ooo patients a month, around 5,000 of which are charity cases. Annually, it serves an average of 60,000 indigent patients through its free out-patient program, and countless more through its special medical programs.
DLSUMC also has a dedicated floor for premier healthcare with two (2) Executive Suites and eight (8) Premier Suites. The rooms in the Premier Wing are of single occupancy with air-conditioning, bathroom, electronically-controlled patient bed with over bed table and side table, sofa, nurse call button, wall panel for oxygen and suction system, brand new pillows, fine linen, wireless internet access, and flat screen television equipped with cable, and a kitchenette with refrigerator, microwave oven, and electric kettle.
Aside from the room features, patients will have a complimentary daily newspaper, bottled water, phone with free local calls, access to business services, and 24-hour CCTV security. What’s best about the Premier Wing is that patients are assigned with a Patient Service Representative who will attend to all the little details from admission to discharge for a less stressful confinement for both the patient and his or her family.
Aside from the exclusive services, when patients avail the Premier Wing rooms, a portion of the cost goes to treating the under-resourced patients of DLSUMC.
The DLSHSI facility was just too big that we ran out of time and wasn’t able to visit their research facility called DE LA SALLE ANGELO KING MEDICAL RESEARCH CENTER. However, Director Sy gave us a backgrounder on the various researches that are currently being done in the center which are mainly focused on Drug Development, Integrative and Complementary Medicine and Youth-At-Risk.
The Center is equipped to conduct clinical trials and is currently the venue of the most number of clinical trials in the Philippines. They have received grants from the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) for their TB research and grants from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) for their anti-dengue project.
Currently, DLSHSI conducts researches on local indigenous medical plants and herbs as alternative cure or treatment for illnesses like dengue and leukemia, an anti-TB drug for children and studies on malaria and breast cancer.
