BeFunky_Vikings Ep 2 (2).jpgIf you’re a big HISTORY CHANNEL fan like I am, you might have noticed a battle axe slicing the TV screen and disrupting random commercial ads just to introduce an upcoming mini-series called VIKINGS.

VIKINGS is HISTORY Channel’s most anticipated series this year. Revisiting the extraordinary tales and adventures of this distinct group of Norse people, the show tells the story of family and brotherhood through the journey of Viking warrior Ragnar Lothbrok, the first of his kind to emerge from Norse legend and onto the pages of history.

I was invited to a preview of HISTORY™ Channel’s VIKINGS last week at Dilingers Makati and got to see the first two episodes of the mini series.

The series mainly revolves around the life of RAGNAR (Travis Fimmel of The BeastBaytown Outlaws) and beautiful wife LAGERTHA (Katheryn Winnick of BonesLove and Other Drugs, The Black Marks) and the first Scandinavians to ever took an overseas expeditions.

Despite themes of conflict, warfare and bloodshed – for these were extreme times – VIKINGS is also a family saga at heart.  In fact, the first episode aptly titled as RITES OF PASSAGE focuses on the traditions, dreams and aspirations of an ordinary farmer at that time.

Here are 5 Things about the VIKINGS you may not know yet:

  1. Vikings did not actually wore horned helmets.
  2. Vikings buried their loved ones who passed away in boats.
  3. Vikings visited the shores of the American content 500 years before it was discovered by Christopher Columbus
  4. Berserk comes from the name of a group of terrifying Viking warriors who wore bear or wolf skins and howl like wild animals during raids and battles.
  5. Vikings believed in Norse Mythology with numerous gods which includes Odin, Thor and Loki.

Joining Fimmel and Winnick in VIKINGS are Gabriel Byrne (Earl Heraldson), Gustaf Skarsgard (Floki), Clive Standen (Rollo), George Blagden (Athelstan), Jessalyn Gilsig (Siggy) and Nathan O’Toole (Bjorn).

Award-winning director Michael Hirst is the creator of this US$40 million 9-part mini series.  Hirst is known for his feats as head writer, creator, and executive producer of drama series The Tudors and co-producer of hit series Camelot, among others.

Here are the Vikings episode list and schedule:

Episode 1: RITES OF PASSAGE (September 29)
