Here’s my copy of that album and this one’s for keep!

I was able to talk to Ogie Alcasid last Tuesday (November 20) during the media launch of his album at Patio Carlito in Quezon City.

Instead of asking Ogie the secret to his success, I asked Ogie what he think are the things that he did right to make him the icon he is now in the Philippine music industry and he said:

“I just enjoyed it.  Sineryoso ko pero hindi masyado.  Nag-enjoy lang ako sa ginagawa ko.  Umabot na pala ko ng 25 years pero di ko namamalayan.  I just enjoyed everything.”

When asked what are the milestones in his career he said:

“Ang mga milestones ko ay personal in nature like sa family pero if I am to assess my career in the music industry, I think it’s the time when I won Entertainer of the Year Award for a couple of times and then as a Hall of Famer.  As a performer, the recognition was very fulfilling.  Of course, the sales recognition fro my albums because that tells me that the people have accepted what I did.”

I asked him which came first in his career, being a songwriter or a singer and when’s the first time he ever wrote a song, he said:

“Parang sabay.  Nagsusulat at kumakanta.  The first time I ever wrote a song was when I was 8 years old I think.  The song was for an Aunt who’s sick that time.”

When asked about the current status of the OPM he said:

“I heard from a survey that OPM right now is getting really strong.  Nabubuhay na ulit ang OPM ngayon and I am very happy with that because that is really our goal in the organization.  We’re going to have a lot of activities next year to further boost this newly found strength in the OPM industry but it has to start locally and with the young people.”

Before I left, I also asked master songwriter Ogie Alcasid a word of advise for the young aspiring Filipino songwriters and he said:

“Being a songwriter is a special calling,  hindi pwedeng ibaliwala.  If you have it cultivate it,  ilabas mo and make it grow!  Kailangan lang talaga medyo kapalan natin ang ating mga mukha.”

I too have written a few songs during my high school and college days and like what Ogie said, maybe I just wasn’t that brave enough to explore if that was a calling or not.  Anyway, if that short message from the master himself sounded like a challenge for me, I hope that musically inclined people who reads this post find some comfort and inspiration from Ogie’s words like I did.

Ogie Alcasid will also have a 25th Anniversary Celebration TV Special on GMA this Sunday (November 25).  The show features special guests and friends Janno Gibbs, Michael V, Jaya, JayR, La Diva and also some of the hitmakers in his album like Gary V, Christian Bautista, Richard Poon and many others.

THE SONGWRITER AND THE HITMAKERS is out now in the market under Universal Records, Inc.
