Its been 13 Years since one of the sturdiest band in the Philippine local music scene – SPONGE COLA started making music. To celebrate this milestone, frontman YAEL YUZON together with GOSH DILAY, ARMO ARMOVIT and TEDMARK CRUZ decided to hold their very first solo concert at the Music Museum this coming July 19 entitled ‘MAXIMUM CAPACITY.’
They’ve done countless of shows both local and foreign since they’ve started playing together but this is their first shot in doing a SOLO on stage. When asked why? Yael simply said that ‘they’ve been busy doing other stuff.’
The concert dubbed as MAXIMUM CAPACITY, was described by Yael as intimate and full of surprises.
“The bulk of the songs that we will be playing will come from the first album, a bunch of unreleased songs plus all the hits and the new ones,” Yael said during the band’s press conference held at the Universal Tower last Thursday (June 27).
The band will be playing around 16 songs during the concert including some of their most requested tunes online like 22, Neon and Dragonfly. Yael said that the band’s main concern as of this moment is on how to give the crowd the time of their lives on the 19th and also that they perform all the songs really well on stage. Since most of the songs will come from earlier albums, they’ll have to really relearn a lot of their previous stuff.
When asked about how close the band members are, Yael said,
“We’re close enough to be friends – let’s just say that we’re friends in just the right way.” he explained.
It’s a Family Affair!
That could’ve been an alternate title for Sponge Cola’s first major concert. They’ll have GARY VALENCIANO as guest on the 19th. Gary V. sang with the band in their 2009 single Ayt! -their first danceable tune. So expect Yael and the rest of Sponge Cola grooving to that sound with Mr. Pure Energy.
Gary V’s son PAOLO VALENCIANO of the band Salamin is directing the concert, MAXIMUM CAPACITY. Paolo also collaborated with Sponge Cola on their single NEW STEEL included in their multi-awarded album Araw, Oras, Tagpuan together with ria redulla and los magno.
Another special guest in the concert is OPM’s Sweetheart ZIA QUIZON who appeared in their music video for the song TAMBAY. That song, which stayed at the top of the hit charts for weeks was ironically succeeded by Zia’s AKO NA LANG.
ZIA’s half-sister, singer-host KARYLLE TATLONGHARI is of course, Yael’s sweetheart. And she will be there as well. Not to perform though but to watch. However, Yael said that the concert will be spontaneous, they will be jamming with guests as well as with some of the audience, so anything could happen. Yael also revealed that Karylle has been secretly guesting in some of their songs as one of the girl vocals and vice-versa.
Speaking of Karylle and Yael, the two will be competing with each other as interpreters for the 2013 Philippine Popular Music Festival (PhilPop) Finals which will happen on July 20 at the Meralco Theater. Yael will sing PhilPop Finalist Paul Armesin’s SEGUNDO, while Karylle will lend her voice for Lara Maige’s SA ‘YO NA LANG AKO.
Yael kids that PhilPop 2013 will be a battle for 2nd place and hope that Karylle takes 2nd since his song SEGUNDO will be first.
“Lahat naman ng mga songwriters na kasali sa finals panalo na. The PhilPop Finals Night is just a way for us to celebrate OPM and to celebrate being Filipinos, who we are and how we love music.” Yael explained.
Universal Records management revealed during the press conference that Sponge Cola might come out with another new EP soon. Yael said that they already have around 10-11 songs that are album-ready. Currently their EP District is still out in the market. Their single “Pick Your Poison” was the theme song for the GMA Film SOSY PROBLEMS.
For tickets to the MAXIMUM CAPACITY Concert call Music Museum at 7210635 or Ticketworld at 8919999.

Red Horse Beer Muziklaban grand champion, A MUSIC THEORY recently signed a music deal with MCA Musics joining the recording company’s growing roster of local talents like Urbandub, Pupil, Franco, Chicosci, Tanya Markova, Pedicab, Nyoy Volante, Sabrina, Krissy & Ericka, Solenn Heussaff, Loonie and Ron Henley among others.
MCA Music is also home to the biggest international acts like Taylor Swift, U2, Snow Patrol, Keane, Justin Bieber, Lady GaGa, Demi Lovato, Paul McCartney, Lionel Richie, Gotye, Rihanna, Sting, Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey, Jessie J, Maroon 5, The Wanted, PSY and many more.
The band is composed of CHOLO on vocals, JC on guitars, LORCE on bass and JOHN JO on drums. A MUSIC THEORY started building its foundation when they stepped on their college years in De La Salle Univeristy-Manila, from school projects they decided to commit the group into the next level. Then past October 24, 2008, the band’s name was born at JNJ Studio in Malate.
Present during the contract signing: MCA Music president Ricky R. Ilacad and witnessed by executives, Wilson Cruz (marketing and sales director), Kiko Guevarra (A & R manager), Sammy Samaniego (Artists Manager) and Mark Bonifacio (OPM label manager).
There seems to be nothing that Sam Concepcion could not do. He won a singing contest, top-billed numerous musical theater shows, starred in TV and movie projects – all these earned him adulation from fans. Now, he dabbles into a new field by being the newest MYX VJ.
With his vast exposure in the music scene, Sam is definitely a shoo-in for the job. Sam is one of the homegrown artists of Universal Records, his record label for the past eight years. Sam has released three albums, which spawned hits like Forever Young, Even If, Happy, Kung Fu Fighting, Miss You, and Someone. When asked how he feels about his new assignment, Sam quips,
“This is entirely different from what I do usually as a singer. I only get to do these things when MYX asks me to be Celebrity MYX VJ, but now I get to do this for a longer time. It is exciting for me because, really, my core is music. I am glad that I was given this chance.”
With his humor and gift of gab, Sam intends to reach out to the younger market and encourage them to support the music industry, most especially OPM.
Sam is set to release his fourth album under Universal Records, which promises to present the new SAM.
You can watch Sam on MYX on the Wednesday edition of the MYX Daily Top Ten and episodes of MYX Take 5, Pop MYX, Pinoy MYX, and My MYX.

After the successful album launch of his 6th Studio Album LEGENDS at the Eastwood Mall and ASAP, RICHARD POON sat down with some press and online writers last Monday (April 29) to discuss about the many changes in his career, musical style and personal life.
31 year-old RICHARD POON has become a household name already as the Philippine’s Jazz Singer and Big Band CROONER. What a lot of people don’t know is that before entering the music scene, Richard was the designated family driver and chef at his father’s LITTLE POON RESTAURANT. During the interview he said that if somehow, after entering show business and it didn’t go well, he’d still have his career as a chef as a fallback. But thankfully, the CROONER’s career is as vibrant as ever especially now that he’s under a new label.
POON ON UNIVERSAL RECORDS
LEGENDS is his 6th studio album and first solo Pop album under UNIVERSAL RECORDS PHILIPPINES. Richard said that the transfer was an event waiting to happen. His first label was Viva and that was when he was with the band U-Turn way back 2004. All his solo album on the other hand was with MCA.
“My former label is good but I’m very happy with UR (Universal Records), they’re more aggressive. “
POON ON LEGENDS
Aside from being with a new production label, Richard has also taken a break from his Big Band Music with LEGENDS as he sings some of the most beautifully written pop songs ever sung from pop legends like Lionel Richie, Carpenters, Stevie Wonder and yes, Richard also has a rendition of Madonna’s ‘Borderline’ which I think is the song that puts the POP in his pop legends album.
According to Richard, the album is not really a farewell to Jazz and Big Band, it’s more like a ‘Poon Goes Pop’ album.
“I don’t think that I would leave Big Band Music even as I try pop because that’s my niche.”
The album has twelve tracks including a duet with Christian Bautista for the song ‘The Girl Is Mine’ immortalized by Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson. Richard also shared that of all the songs in his new album, the one that he considers the hardest to sing is Stevie Wonder’s ‘All In Love Is Fair’ while his most favorite is the song ‘Crazy’by Kenny Rogers.
Here are some snaps of Richard displayed in the venue of the launch. All the photos are included in the album design. The pictorials were all done inside the classy interiors of Hotel Celeste in Makati:
POON ON POP
Richard admits that he’s had some hesitation in doing the album. He considers the transition as somewhat a ‘Make or Break’ which is also true to some artist who have made a sudden change of genre. He was a little scared at first but the album received some great reviews and much support especially from his new UR family. He said that he was able to make some inputs in the arrangements and thanked Ito Rapadas who worked very hard with the arrangers for making the album sound like no other Pop album in the market. A pop album that still has that Richard ‘The Crooner’ Poon style in it.
“Pop pero medyo class – I like that comment. The album is still me, the songs maybe different but it still sounds like me.”
Here is a video preview of all the songs in the album:
Richard also reveals that he’s no stranger to Pop Music. Pop was his genre when he started performing with a band. The idea of going to big band was a career decision when he decided to become a solo artist. But the main reason why he was eager to go solo in the first place was the fact that he has around forty (40) original compositions that he wanted to share to the world. A dream that he is still pursuing. Although Richard was not able to come out with an all original album yet, he was however able to write a few songs for fellow artists like Piolo and Regine’s ‘Paano Kita Iibigin’ and Piolo’s ‘Turuan Mo Ako.”
Richard dreams of having a ‘David Foster’ type of album someday with all his original compositions interpreted by well-loved OPM artists like Gary V., Jose Mari Chan, Ogie Alcasid and the likes. But his goals right now is to simply get better on his craft, come out with more albums that will bring him more awards.
RICHARD POON ON CRITICISM
Richard shared that he’s open to criticisms and that he listens to critics to make him better in his craft.
“I listen to critics, what I do is I eat the flesh and discard the bones after and try hard to be better.”
“I am not Jed Madela and I am happy that I’m not. Jed is a good friend of mine and sometimes I do want to be him but I’m not. My voice is mid range, hindi ako pwede sa mga birit at pang finale. But I am happy with that. When people say that they love to listen to my songs when they want to go to sleep or relax, at first I’m not really sure If that was a complement but I have learned to appreciate that in time. And I like that my voice belongs to that category. Soothing and great for easy listening. And that is my niche.”
Richard also shared that the better singer in the family is really her sister, EVA MARIE POON and she was even offered a singing career years before to be packaged as the Coco Lee of the Philippines but she turned it down.
Richard’s determination to become a singer was further strengthened by his mother’s advice, Richard’s mother is Eva Huang a former singer in Taiwan and she said,
“Even if you don’t have the best voice, you will still win the audience when you put your heart in all the songs that you will sing.”
POON ON MARICAR REYES
And speaking of heart, did you know that Richard Poon and girlfriend Maricar Reyes are already engaged? Well the announcement was made by Richard himself during the interview last Monday. He said that she fell in love with Maricar the moment she laid eyes on her in Betty La Fea. They’ve been in an official relationship for almost a year now.
Maricar Reyes will be with Richard in his new Music Video for his album’s carrier single TRULY made popular by Lionel Richie in the 80′s.
Richard said during the interview that Maricar’s taste in music is different from his. In fact, she’s not really into the type of music that Richard usually sings. Maricar is more into the alternative genre. He also said that the only song that Maricar liked in his album was the song ‘And I Love Her’ made popular by the Beatles which is of course the most alternative of all the tracks. However, he was assured by her real-life sweetheart,
“I may not be so in love with your type of music but I love your voice.” she said.
POON ON AN ORDINARY DAY
To get to know more about Richard, we asked Ms. Caress Caballero, her handler at Cornerstone Talent Management Center, what the crooner is like on an ordinary day. And she sums it up with one word – JOLOGS.
“Richard is not sosyal in real life, maski ano kinakain n’yan at kaya matulog kahit sa banig lang.”
Richard added that he loves to eat fishball and betamax but not kwek kwek. He also admits that he’s probably the only talent of cornerstone who’s not into going to GYM and work-outs. He is also not a beach type of person and his idea of leisure time or vacation is – ANYWHERE WITH MARICAR.
Richard Poon’s new album will be out in record stores this week under Universal Records Philippines. Here’s my copy:
He will be having a lot of shows and mall tours to promote LEGENDS. Richard will also be part of the SESSIONISTAS Big Concert at the Araneta Coliseum in August. This will be the group’s 5th Year Anniversary concert minus Nina but with the addition of Kean Cipriano.
Say goodbye to the local Big Band Crooner, as Richard Poon goes back to pop with his latest album Legends, which will be launched on April 26, Friday, 7:00 p.m., Eastwood Mall Open Park, and April 28, Sunday, 7:00 p.m., Venice Piazza at McKinley Hill.
In Legends, Richard traces his pop roots by singing some of the biggest pop artists in the international music industry – classics by Lionel Richie (Truly), Whitney Houston (All At Once), Barbra Streisand (Evergreen), Madonna (Borderline), Barry Manilow (Ready To Take A Chance Again), among others.
“This is an interesting point in my career,” says Richard. “Aside from being with a new label (Universal), I am also going back to pop after years of doing big band.”
Richard adds that he welcomes the challenge with open arms, and he hopes that people will continue supporting him and his music. In the album, Richard collaborates with friend Christian Bautista in the Michael Jackson hit The Girl Is Mine.
Legends will have its album launch also this April 28, Sunday, on ASAP 18.
