From school to recording studio to movie and teleserye shoot to party Pilipinas rehearsals to pocket interviews, presscons and mall shows – What makes GMA singer-actress JULIE ANNE SAN JOSE tick?
The 18-year old former Sugarpop member Julie Anne San Jose has truly grown from a popstar kid to television’s most talented and biggest rising star to date. She has already conquered almost all the areas in the entertainment industry making her a total packaged performer.
Julie Anne is a mainstay in the Sunday Noontime show Party Pilipinas. Her latest television project this year after Tween Hearts is the top rated Together Forever where she plays as Toyang opposite Elmo Magalona who plays Ely in the series. When asked if she’s now ready for bigger Teleserye roles and primetime – Julie Anne quickly and confidently said yes.
Julie Anne is currently recording for the new Station ID of GMA and will be in Naga on August 12 with the whole Party Pilipinas cast. Together Forever airs every Sunday after Party Pilipinas and will run for 13 weeks.
This is indeed a good year for Julie Anne as she and love team partner Elmo Magalona are now down to their final three (3) shoots for their movie JUST ONE SUMMER under GMA Films which will open on August 15. The film, directed by Mac Alejandre is expected to take their tandem a notch higher as fans eagerly awaits it on the big screen.
Julie Anne appears as Bertina/Beto in the much awaited big screen project which has a powerhouse cast including veteran actress Gloria Romero, Alice Dixson, Joel Torre, Cherry Pie Picache, Buboy Garovillo and Sheena Halili.
The film will also come out with a movie soundtrack that will include her duet with Elmo Magalona for the Francis M original ”Girl Be Mine.”
During the recording session, Elmo and Julie Anne collaborated on how they could give a new “flavor” to the song. Julie Anne helped Elmo out on some tricky second voices, while Elmo guided Julie Anne on some of the melodies since he’s more familiar with his dad’s song. After months of waiting, the hugely followed love team of Julie Anne and Elmo — endearingly called by their fans as JuliElmo — will finally hit the big screen next month. The two are excited to see the final outcome of their film which took almost six months to complete.
“Just One Summer” is directed by Amaya director Mac Alejandre and is produced and distributed by GMA Films.
Julie Anne said that she and Elmo will be on a movie promotional tour on July 30 at SM Clark pampanga, August 5 at SM Cebu and also at SM Davao (no date yet).
Another film is also in the works, ELIAS which is going to be directed by Direk Rico Guttierrez. But Julie Anne said that nothing’s final yet.
This year is by far a harvest time for Julie Anne.
She has already gotten a number of awards and citations from leading award-giving bodies. Tatt Awards gave her the People’s Choice Award and the Trending Personality. She shares with Elmo the Most Stylish Loveteam honor given at the first Candy Style Awards while the 43rd Guillermo Mendoza Foundation Awards her as the most Promising Female Singer/Performer this year.
She’s also one of the most active of teleserye theme singers today, Julie Anne has given voice to the main themes for Broken Vow and Lie To Me, both instant hits among televiewers. Last year he sang the songs for Sisid and Dwarfina.
To add to her achievements, the Kapuso pop star and singing sensation will be launching her first solo recording and self-titled album this August. The album has 10 tracks with 6 originals and 3 revivals. The carrier single is “I’ll Be There” and its MTV which was directed by Mark Reyes is currently doing great on YouTube.

Julie Anne’s first solo album is a mixture of ballads, pop, rock and RNB. She even has a rap somewhere in one of the songs. The album launch will happen during her Grand Fans’ Day on July 28 at the SM North EDSA SkyDome.
Did you know: That aside from singing, Julie Anne also plays the drums, piano, guitar, flute , lyre , keyboard, beat-box, violin and xylophone.
Now that’s what I call a rare talent!
Julie Anne is currently an irregular sophomore student at the Angelicum College, a Catholic school run by Dominicans (also running UST) and taking up Communication Arts.
She said that she prefers normal schooling over home studies or online studies. She stopped for one semester last year but have decided to go back to school this year because she misses it.
“Hindi ako sana’y nang walang pasok. Masaya sa normal school compared to home school. Mas maganda kasi kung may interaction with the professors and fellow students at yung pumapasok at nasa loob ng school grounds. Iba pa rin kasi ang feeling.” Julie Anne explained. ”Matatapos ako in two years kung tuloy-tuloy. Gusto ko makatapos, and I want to add that to the things that I have achieved. I want to graduate, isa talaga yun sa mga goals ko.” she added.
During the interview, Julie Anne shared some of her experiences in school. She said that she feels safe and secured inside Angelicum and wants to be treated normally although sometimes it’s unavoidable that some of her school mates would ask for her autograph or a photo op. She narrated also a time when she was asked to get a permission slip to enter a class because she arrived late. The reason for being late was of course – school mates asking for pictures taken with her. A very unusual excuse that only stars like Julie Anne can use.
She also said that in school, she was the loner type. She prefers reading inside the library and to focus on her studies.
Julie Anne’s major classes this semester are Philosophy, Communication Theories and Mass Media Communications.
With all her successes and current projects – Teleserye, album, movie, party pilipinas and not to mention her school schedule in Angelicum. I asked her how is she able to do that all at the same. Was there a time that she felt a little burnout with all her responsibilities?
Julie Anne said that yes, physically, sometimes she feels a little worn out. ”Napapagod din, pero nag-eenjoy kasi ako sa mga ginagawa ko at love ko itong ginagawa ko kaya hindi ko na rin napapansin yung pagod.”
She also added that she stays away from illness or fatigue by taking lots of vitamin supplements and energy drinks.
Julie Anne was very vocal about her friendship with Frencheska Farr – she considers her as her closest friend in showbiz.
Julie Anne said that she and Elmo are really great friends. Nothing serious, we’re buddies. She’s not looking at any serious relationships right now with anyone and Elmo and her are both busy and focused on their work and careers. The Elmo and Julie Anne Love Tandem is already 2 years old.
Julie Anne explained why Sam thanked her and told her that she was his life-saver over twitter – the first time that the two met and collaborated was during the OMG Awards, Sam was not feeling well that day and wasn’t able to sing properly, it was an unrehearsed production and Julie Anne said that Sam must’ve felt that she carried the song for him a little during the number. That’s why he’s so thankful.
Julie Anne dreamt of becoming a lawyer. But now with her course, she said that she’s most likely to pursue broadcasting rather than law. But it was a possibility that she’s not ruling-out. I asked her if she would like to go into politics someday, she said, that she’s not going to say yes or no because you’ll never know. It’s like she’s saying that she’ll just cross the bridge when she gets there but for now no concrete answers yet.
She however said that she feels blessed with the way her career in showbiz is going and thanked all her fans for all their support.
