Old and new fans alike experienced Aladdin’s whole new world in the first of SM Cinema’s series of special screenings, which include an immersive advance showing at IMAX, SM Megamall last May 14, ahead of regular viewing schedules.
Disney’s live-action adaptation of Aladdin tells the story of Aladdin (Mena Massoud), a kindhearted street urchin and the power-hungry Grand Vizier Jafar (Marwan Kenzari) as they vie for a magic lamp that has the power to make their deepest wishes come true.
Showing on May 22 here in the Philippines, the live action film adaptation of the 1992 Disney animated musical masterpiece did not disappoint – it was visually stunning, funny and entertaining.
It’s not a movie masterpiece but it is also not as bad as what the early reviewers are saying. Most of the opinions that came out were based on trailers by the way – I’ve watched the whole movie, and it’s not bad.
Casting was perfect except for Jafar who I thought was not creepy enough. Don’t get me wrong, Marwan Kenzari did a good job in acting the part but I was expecting a more sinister-looking (and sounding) Jafar – just like the one in the cartoon.
Princess Jasmine’s character also has more depth in the new film plus we get to see some additional information about the main characters. There are a couple of new characters plus a new Princess Jasmine song.
Will Smith is also perfect as the new Big Genie! I have to admit that I’ve had some doubts prior to watching the film but he made a believer out of me.
