JOYCE CHING is being groomed as the next most vile character in Philippine teleserye!
In GMA Network’s new afternoon Fantasy-Drama series DRAGON LADY, Joyce will play the role of Astrid Chua who will be the main antagonist of the series opposite “the” Dragon Lady played by Janine Gutierrez.
“We wanted this to be a vehicle for Joyce to step up,” said Ms. Hazel Abonita, the show’s Senior Program Manager during the exclusive advance screening of the pilot episode last Friday. “We hope that after Dragon Lady, she will make a mark as a remarkable villain.”
Ms. Hazel also explained that in Philippine soaps, the persona of the villain is equal or at times more vital than the role of the protagonist.
“Mas mahaba ang buhay ng isang kontrabida, parang ulam bland ang lasa pag walang matinding spice. Mas nagwo-work sa Pilipinas ang isang soap pag may kontrabida ka na kinaiinisan. Pag nagalit sa yo ang tao ibig sabihin nagawa mo ng maayos ang trabaho mo.” Ms Hazel explains.
Joyce Ching as Astrid will make life horrible for both Janine Gutierrez who plays the role of the extraordinary Celestina and Tom Rodriguez as Michael Chan.
During the interview, Joyce said that this is not the first time that she’s playing a “kontrabida” role but it is however her most mature “kontrabida” role ever.
Outside the series, Joyce is actually in a real battle – and “the” Dragon Lady is herself. Will she be able to unleash hellfire in this series – let’s all find out.
Astrid is expected to come out on the later part of the 2nd week of the series as a 2nd generation character.
In other news, Joyce Ching is now engage with her non-showbiz boyfriend Kevin Alimon. Will that announcement affect all the plans that GMA has in store for her career and vice versa? Joyce said – not at all.
She told online media that she has already prepared for her role in Dragon Lady and that her plans outside of showbiz will not be much of a hindrance to what she needs to do as an actress.
DRAGON LADY premieres this Monday (March 4) on GMA Afternoon Prime and will air Mondays to Saturdays right after Eat Bulaga.

Ana (The Stepdaughters), the Dragon Lady pilot week will feature Bea Binene as young Almira; Derrick Monasterio as young Charles; and Kristoffer Martin as young Bryan; together with Leo Martinez as Wilson Lim, Vera’s father and a ruthless businessman who is a descendant of a family of dragon worshippers; Isabelle De Leon as young Vera; Denise Barbacena as young Ginger; Mosang as young Doray; Carlene Aguilar as young Philippa; and Lorenz Martinez as young Wilson Lim.
