The CARINDERIA is the original “Pinoy Fastfood” and the food that they serve has become an integral part of our country’s culinary and social identity.
I am proud to say that I have lived a life that’s truly embedded in this unique and humble roadside food stand culture that is truly Filipino. It offers a glimpse into our culture and customs – they are the closest to what one gets to a Filipino home, where great recipes are handed down through generations.
My mom is a great cook. Over three decades ago in Pasay City, she’s known in our small community as “Aling Lourdes” and her small road side food stand is famous for her unique recipe of pork barbecue – still one of the best barbecue ever. And I am not saying this because she’s my mom.
Although her kart was smaller than the traditional Carinderia during those days which is usually an extension of the proprietor’s house, “Aling Lourdes” has made a name for herself serving all kinds of “Inihaw” and snacks like Lugaw, Champorado, Pancit, Sopas, Ginataan and many others.
Aling Lourdes and her small Carinderia was able to send two kids up to college and provide the people of the community delicious but affordable food almost every day for more than a decade.
BUHAY CARINDERIA – REDEFINED
That’s why I am so thrilled that Marylindbert International, Inc. has taken the advocacy of promoting “Buhay Carinderia” and help the entrepreneurs behind them in the process.
Supported for the first time by the Tourism Promotions Board of the Department of Tourism (TPB), as its sole presentor, the 6th staging of Buhay Carinderia will go on a nine-month long journey all over the Philippines to search for the best of the best in the Carinderia culinary scene.
“From these cities and towns, we will identify the best dishes, the individuals that prepared them, and the carinderias where they are connected,” says Linda Legaspi, President and CEO of Marylindbert International during the launch of its 2018 campaign held at the Rizal Park Hotel, Manila.
To document the whole event, Marylindbert International and TPB has partnered with all around foodie and social media influencer Erwan Heusaff (brother to Solenn and husband to Anne Curtis) as their official content creator for Buhay Carinderia.
Erwan will be creating videos showcasing the culinary heroes of Buhay Carinderia – Redefined.
Here are the “Buhay Carinderia – Redefined” schedule of Activities:
- First to be visited are the areas of Northern Luzon – 15 provinces that comprise Regions 1 and 2 as well as the Cordillera Administrative Region – Culminating 2-day Event (Vigan)
- Central Luzon (Pampanga) – Culminating 2-day Event (San Fernando)
- Bicol Region – Culminating 2-day Event (Naga)
- Visayas Region (Regions 6,7 and 8) – Culminating 2-day Event (Cebu)
- Mindanao Region (Regions 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13) – Culminating 2-day Event (Davao)
To cap off the 9-month long journey, “Buhay Carinderia – Redefined” will stage its biggest culinary exposition in November where all the regional bests will gather under one roof.
Also present during the launch is TPB COO and actor Cesar Montano.
“I expect Buhay Carinderia to allow the people behind the carinderia, wherever they may be located, to have a chance to showcase their talents to a wider audience. We will become witness to the discovery of these noteworthy creations that celebrate the vibrant vibe of their town and city,” Montano said in his speech.
The first Buhay Carinderia-Redefined regional exposition is scheduled on June 28 and 29 at the Vigan Convention Center.
