What are the TOP 3 reasons why you would want to visit or have an overnight stay in Tagaytay?

Of course there are a lot of things to do in Tagaytay now. Some would check out the newest resort-type hotels that are sprouting left and right along with high-rise condominiums and mall-type venues like the Summit Ridge Promenade, Ayala Malls Serin and the new Fora Filinvest Lifemalls.

For recreation, the number 1 spot is still Tagaytay Picnic Grove. Barely surviving is People’s Park in the Sky amidst the other new popular attractions like the Residence Inn Zoo, Sky Ranch, Puzzle Mansion, Museo Orlina and many other smaller places of interest.

Tagaytay is also famous for its churches, retreat houses, hillside restaurants, beef, fruit and flower markets. What it used to be famous for though are its Ukay-Ukay shops before it went mainstream in the other parts of the country.

Three Reasons To Visit Tagaytay

BUT if you really think of it deeply, there are only three things that people really look forward to when going on a trip to Tagaytay:

  1. The cool climate.
  2. The Fantastic View of Taal.
  3. The Bulalo.

If you experience all three during your visit then the trip is all worth it! Now if you get all three in one location every second of your stay, then that’s heaven!

The most perfect time to go to Tagaytay is when the temperatures are down but dry and that’s usually during the month of January and February.

Fortunately for me, my visit last week to Tagaytay is when the temperatures are really down – 20°C was the lowest temperature that I recorded but according to the charts, it’s going to get even more colder in the weeks to come for both Tagaytay and even in Mega Manila.

JACOB’S HILL TAGAYTAY

Anyway, I stayed at Jacob’s Hill Tagaytay, a Bed & Breakfast located at No. 2, Hollywood Subdivision, Tagaytay-Calamba Road in Barangay Tolentino East. It’s the first slope you’ll see when you exit the Santa Rosa – Tagaytay Road to Tagaytay-Calamba Road if you’re coming from South Luzon Expressway via Santa Rosa, Laguna.

Formerly known as Fernandina Tagaytay Lake View Villa, Jacob’s Hill Tagaytay is located in the same area where the Tagaytay Econo Inn and Museo Orlina is at and that is actually your landmark and your nearest tourist attraction respectively.

Museo Orlina and Sculpture Garden

The first thing you’ll notice when you go to Jacob’s Hill Tagaytay is not the inn but the fantastic view of Taal, both the lake and its volcano. It’s actually one of the most perfect spot in Tagaytay to view the lake that’s why they had a viewing deck constructed along the road and right beside the Tagaytay Econo Inn.

Anyway, Jacob’s Hill Tagaytay is only a short walk down the hill from the main road. It’s a beautifully constructed old wooden house that’s been converted into a Bed and Breakfast with a couple of rooms that can accommodate single travelers to couples and even the whole family.

Yay!

  • There’s a porch with tables and benches where you can have your breakfast or afternoon coffee.
  • There’s a terrace, similar to the porch but because it’s on the second level of the house, you get a more majestic view of Taal.
  • The room where I stayed is a standard Double Room equipped with a queen size bed, air conditioning unit, cable TV, phone, dining table, two chairs, mini ref, electric kettle, complimentary bottled water, coffee, hot & cold shower, bath towels and toiletries. This room is priced at 1,600 Pesos including tax and service charges. The package includes breakfast.
  • The room has huge windows. I actually turned off the AC, opened the windows, closed the screens and rolled down the curtains to let in the fresh and cool Tagaytay breeze before going to sleep – it’s what I came for so bring it on!
  • Jacob’s Hill Tagaytay is surrounded by vegetation.
  • They have cute CATS!!!

What’s Near

Now aside from Museo Orlina which is just a block away from Jacob’s Hill Tagaytay, this place is also very near the Tagaytay Public Market and the Balibago Jeepney Terminal. The closest restaurant is called KayeRyan Grill which serves local cuisines, there’s also a nearby Lapid’s Chicharon store, 7-Eleven, Colettes and Maria’s Pasalubong shop, Daniel’s Tagaytay Souvenir shop and Mr. Moo’s Fresh Milk and Kesong Puti.

Further down the road to Calamba is the Ina Ng Laging Saklolo Parish, Our Lady of Manaoag and Tagaytay Picnic Grove. There are tricycles that can take you there from Jacob’s Hill Tagaytay for as low as 20 Pesos.

Now on the other side going to Nasugbu, you can get a tricycle for as low as 40 Pesos that can take you to as far as Olivarez in Aguinaldo Hiway where the bus stations going to Manila are loading. Majority of the hillside restaurants worth visiting in Tagaytay are located in the Tagaytay-Nasugbu Road so even if you’re staying at Jacob’s Hill, you might want to put in your itinerary a trip to the other side.

Bulalo, Lechon Kawali and Pancit at Loumar’s

At sun down, we went to Ayala Serin Mall to have our dinner at Loumar’s and then to the nearest Bag of Beans restaurant for dessert and coffee. It’s about a block away from the Our lady of Lourdes Parish in Tagaytay.

The original Bag of Beans is of course located further down going to Nasugbu and near Mendez Road. It will pass Sky Ranch and Mushroom Burger. Way too far for a stroll from Olivarez, you’ll need to take public transportation.

Nay!

  • While there’s coffee at Jacob’s Hill Tagaytay, there are no coffee shops or hillside restos anywhere near the area. The nearest Starbucks is about 1.5 kilometers away.
  • I love the nostalgia in the place but the doors and windows needs a bit of improvements. The bathroom door at Room 3 where I stayed is busted. I also accidentally scraped my finger while trying to close the room’s interior slide barrel bolt door lock, a key card system would be very much appreciated.
  • The water was fine during the first day but in the morning of my 2nd day, the water supply was very low. I am not sure if it’s an isolated incident but having no water in the morning is always a serious matter.
  • The rooms are not sound-proofed by the way so when someone from the other room watches TV in full volume, be warned. 🙂
Jacobs Hill Tagaytay

Over-all, Jacob’s Hill Tagaytay is a homey place to stay in when visiting Tagaytay. You get two out of the three – a fantastic view of Taal and an environment that’s so Tagaytay. A Bulalo experience, like I said earlier, is on the other side. 🙂

Another plus for Jacob’s Hill Tagaytay are their friendly and courteous staff. So yes, it’s worth visiting again but I hope they add a coffee shop and more restaurant in that area so there’s a place to hangout and enjoy the view and the cool weather.

How To Commute To Jacob’s Hill Tagaytay?

Coming from Manila, the easiest route is if you have a vehicle that you can drive through the South Expressway via the Santa Rosa – Tagaytay Road.

When taking a bus from Manila or Pasay, you go look for the bus that has a Tagaytay sign board, usually those going to Nasugbu. The most popular bus terminal going to Tagaytay that has regular trips are the one at EDSA Rotonda Pasay City. It’s just right beside the MRT station and Sogo Hotel. There’s also a McDonald’s and Chowking outlet near the bus station. You can’t miss it.

Ask the conductor to drop you off at Tagaytay Olivarez Plaza. Fare from Pasay and Manila will range from a little over 70 pesos to 90 Pesos. After getting off the bus, go to the other side of the road and look for the tricycle terminal near McDonald’s – ask the tricycle driver to take you to Tagaytay Econo Inn. Fare is 40 to 50 Pesos.

Jacob’s Hill Tagaytay is just a couple of steps down Hollywood.
