DID YOU KNOW that Halo-Halo, the Philippines’ all-time favorite summer refreshment, is derived from the Japanese Kakigo-ri, a traditional way of preserving various types of beans or legumes like monggo, chickpeas (garbanzos) and kidney beans in thick syrups. It is later made into a delicious dessert dish by adding crushed ice and fruits.

Introduced by the Japanese during the pre-war era it made its way to Filipino culture and has since then became one of the country’s most popular desserts.

A lot of province here in the Philippines have made claims to produce the best Halo-Halo in the country like Pampanga and Cavite but of course, the best is always the one that you can readily enjoy at home – and that is the ones found near your place of residence. And there are a lot of them during the summer.

Or, you can make them yourself – all you need are beans, fruits, crushed ice and lots of creamy milk. 🙂

But if you want to go and taste the ORIGINAL Japanese Kakigo-ri (Halo-Halo) just head on to the hottest JaPinoy dessert hub in the country today – KIONCHAN.

Last July 15, and during the celebration of the Filipino-Japanese Friendship Week I went to Angeles, Pampanga to witness the grand opening the 2nd, 3rd and 4th KIONCHAN outlet here in the Philippines.

Located in Marquee Mall, the cute pug logo and signature yellow, orange and blue painted KIONCHAN kiosks now serves 10 varieties of Kakigo-ri, 21 affordable and tangy crepes and 5 fruity Puchi Parfait flavors.

Present during the launch were KIONCHAN founder Hiroki Honma, CEO Akiko Okamoto, general manager Kanako Takizawa and Filipino partners Maria Consuelo Osorio-Coson (Vice Chairperson) and John Cornelius Coson (President).

“We envision Kionchan to be an iconic dessert chain that serves Japanese-Filipino comfort food. And to make it as one of the symbols of Japanese and Filipino friendship.” said CEO Okamoto.

“Our recipe is basically a fusion of Filipino and Japanese ingredients like our Kinako (soy bean powder) Caramel Crepe, Kinako Saba and Matcha Ube Puchi Parfait.” added Vice Chair Coson.

Aside from desserts, their fourth outlet which is located at Food Court of the mall serves affordable Ramen dishes. TOMOCHAN by Kionchan serves a mean Syoyu Ramen for as low as 79 Pesos a bowl.

With the opening of the three kiosks at Marquee Mall, they now have four stores in the Philippines, three in Pampanga and the first one in Baclaran, Paranaque.

The KIONCHAN group plans to put up a total of 30 branches nationwide in the next two years particularly in locations within Ortigas, Quezon City and San Juan. They also plan to open the brand for franchising by next year.
