MORE than the amazing story line, it’s the captivating music and showstopping choreography that really kept the audience of the Manila production of KINKY BOOTS glued to the stage.

Nyoy Volante who plays drag queen turn shoe designer “Lola” owned this! It’s “Your Face Sounds Familiar” all over again and so much more. He’s such a natural performer, whatever clothes he (or she) wears. Imagine him sporting a totally different persona. There’s not a trace of the real Nyoy in Kinky Boots, even his voice was different.

He’s gone full diva on the Act II song “Hold Me In Your Heart” – something to look forward to for those who haven’t watched it yet.

Laurence Mossman as “Charlie” also gave a stunning rendition of the song “Soul of a Man.”

My son Neo, who watched the show with me at RCBC Plaza is an avid fan of theater musicals and said that Mossman has excellent vocal quality but lacks movement. Not sure what he meant by that though.

The other actor in Kinky Boots that my son really enjoyed watching is Yanah Laurel as the factory worker Lauren. And I kinda expected that already, I would be very disappointed if Yanah didn’t make audiences feel excited in her shows.

Aside from Nyoy Volante, the other performers that got the biggest applause that night were the dancers who played Lola’s Angels – their dance numbers in the songs “Land of Lola”, “Sex is in the Heels”, “Everybody Say Yeah” and “Raise You Up” will make you want to forget that you’re in a stage musical – and just dance.

But I think my favorite scene (and song) in the whole show is that emotional one with Lola and Charlie singing “Not My Father’s Son.”

Kudos to Cyndi Lauper for the wonderful music! Also, to Atlantis, the production and the rest of the Manila Cast – Congratulations and Thank You for making this happen!

For those who haven’t watched this yet, show runs until July 23 at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati.
