I’ve been a 7-Eleven fan since the early 1990’s.

I remember that there’s this outlet beside the Medical Center Manila (ManilaMed) along United Nations Avenue where we used to hang out during break time while we’re on our graveyard clinical duty. I took up nursing at Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) and ManilaMed was our school’s partner hospital so naturally we’d be assigned there.

The 10pm to 6am early morning shift is such a hassle because not many stores are open 24 hours back then. 7-Eleven was a lifesaver and our source of coffee, hot cup noodles, breads and chips among many other things.

I’ve known 7-Eleven for almost three decades already and it was only last week that I learned about the real story behind the name. 🙂

I get that the numbers may have something to do with time – but I wasn’t sure if it meant 7 days a week and 11 hours a day or whatever, and that was my best guess actually. I never really got to the part of researching about its actual origin.

Until I was invited to attend last week’s #711dayPH concert event at Eton Centris! 7-Eleven day is of course July 11 (the 11th day of the 7th month of the year).

So, I found out that 7-Eleven was actually the duration of time from which the first convenience store outlet in Dallas, USA operated way back in 1927. From 7 in the morning up until 11 in the evening and seven days a week. And back then, it was the only store that operated like that – and thus, the beginning of the so-called convenience store.

It was a Southland Ice Company employee who thought of the idea and he was at that time only selling milk, eggs and bread to co-employees and everyone else who lives near the ice dock. Talk about an entrepreneurial spirit.

And now, with 61,000 stores in 17 countries across the globe and over 2,000 stores in the Philippines nationwide, 7-Eleven is no doubt the world’s largest convenience retail chain in the world.

A celebration is therefore in order, hence, #711dayPH

7-Eleven Day is a string of different kinds of activities happening in July starting with the launch of CLiQQ Every Day! Deals where CLiQQ users can choose 1 out of 3 mystery boxes available in the mobile app starting July 11! Redeem the product within 24 hours and you may claim them within the month.

I got WiFi credits from the box I chose. 🙂

7-Eleven customers in Bacolod, Iloilo and at their LV Locsin store all enjoyed a buy-one-take-one deal for every purchase of any Slurpee variants from July 1 to 11.

City Blends on the other hand offered their 12oz cup of drink for only 20 Pesos from July 10 to 16. Customers only need to get the QCode found on the 7-Eleven Philippines FB page and present it to the counter to avail of the promo.

To help Filipinos affected by the conflict in Marawi, 7-Eleven also deployed donation boxes in all their corporate stores in Mindanao. While in Marikina, the Philippine Seven Corporation (PSC) and PhilSeven Foundation (PFI) together with the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) conducted a tree planting activity at the Marikina Watershed of Barangay Calawis in Antipolo City.

The biggest event however happened on the day itself –  July 11, 2017!

7-Eleven LV Locsin Store hosted “A Cup of Thankful” where they invited renowned calligraphist Carl Chua to spread the message of appreciation in City Blends cups.

And then in the afternoon they rolled out a special 7-Eleven food truck at Eton, Centris to offer their Rock Back To School Combo of Cheesy Pepper Dog BigBite and a 16oz cup of Slurpee for only 49 Pesos! What’s great about this deal is that a portion of all sales from this promo will be given to the student council programs of 8 selected colleges and universities.

To end #711dayPH with a bang, 7-Eleven also invited a couple bands to the Eton Centris grounds for a sampler of this year’s Rock Back to School Concert Series featuring 6Cyclemind, Moonstar88, Banda ni Kleggy, Gracenote and many others.

Eunice Jorge of Gracenote

The concert series is scheduled to go to different colleges and universities in Mega Manila including Adamson, PLM, UST and more.

Happy 7-Eleven Day! #711dayPH
