Five years after introducing the Switch & Save campaign, Watsons Philippines are now in the process of introducing more ‘value-for-money’ personal care essentials to Filipino consumers under the famous Watsons brand.
Back in 2012, the Switch & Save campaign was conceptualized as a way to introduce a couple of Watsons personal care products that are practically cheaper than the other brands but of the same quality. The campaign encourages Filipinos to SWITCH to the Watsons brand to cut down on expenses and SAVE more.
The Switch & Save campaign proved to be a success and year after year, the company introduced more and more items that carried the Watsons brand like toothbrushes, tissues, shampoo, lotions, cream baths and even generic medicines (in 2014) – a more affordable, high quality alternative to the leading brands.
With the Watsons name at stake, I think the group could not afford to risk it on low quality and ineffective products – so QUALITY is not going to be an issue, and in fact, it is the company’s TOP priority.
But even with so many switchers on board, not everyone seemed to be convinced. The notion that “cheaper means lower quality” had some shoppers resisting the change.
That’s when a big idea was born- The Switch Test. The team would mount an in-store activity that asked shoppers to compare Watsons to the leading brands. The hitch- they’d have to do it blind. Without being able to see the brands, customers were asked to try out two products and choose the one they would rather buy. From body scrubs to hair irons, shoppers felt their way through the Watsons selection, and the results were overwhelming.
8 out of 10 shoppers chose the Watsons Label product over the leading branded counterpart, an amazing testament to Watsons quality.
But the surprises didn’t end there. When informed of the savings they could get with Watsons Label, the remaining shoppers who at first chose the leading brands were also convinced to make the switch. With results like these, the team knew that they were on to something big. The next challenge was to bring the same experience to more people.

Running the same blind test used in stores, Watsons asked each of the celebs the simple question, “What’s the difference between these two products?” Their verdict- none! Not even our discerning endorsers could tell the difference between Watsons products quality and the leading brands’. There was, however, one big change they all noted. Yesterday afternoon, Watsons Philippines introduces to the media the six celebrities that they chose for the Switch & Save Test.
Held at the Isabela Ballroom of the Makati Shangri-la Hotel, the celebs played with the media guests and online influencers a Switch & Save version of the popular TV game show “Family Feud” to learn more about what people look for in various personal care products.
After the program, the Watsons Philippines team led by Marketing Director Ms. Maria Victoria “Viki” Encarnacion revealed the two-segment new TV commercial of Watsons’ Switch & Save campaign showing clips of the Switch Test conducted with the six celebs.
