I have recently had the chance to meet and talk with TV5’s new President and CEO Coach Chot Reyes a couple of days before Christmas!
Coach Chot Reyes was a 5x PBA Coach of the Year awardee who first headed the Sports5 division of the Kapatid Network and D5 Studio before assuming the position of President and CEO in October 2016 replacing Noel Lorenzana.
During the informal presscon held at Annabel’s Restaurant in Quezon City last December 13, Coach Chot laid down the initial plans of TV5 for 2017 beginning with the announcement that the Kapatid Network will be transforming itself as the home of Indie film-makers on free TV.
As a start, TV5 will be rolling out several projects with premiere Indie film maker Direk Brillante Mendoza. Coach Chot said that they consider Direk Brillante as a content partner and will soon open up doors to other brilliant minds who have some innovative ideas for TV5 programs.
Brillante Mendoza Presents which will start in January 2017 will be a monthly “made-for-TV” full length feature featuring various themes shot in different places. Aside from this, TV5 will also come out with 13-part mini series also directed by Brillante Mendoza and a partnership for a full length film production.
TV5 also partnered with Solar and the organizers of Miss Universe to broadcast live the pageant on January 30. The network also got exclusive rights on the swimwear competition on January 27 and the long gown competition on January 29. D5 Studio also got all exclusives on the digital content of Miss Universe including the behind-the-scenes.
Coach Chot and TV5 Chief Financial Officer Ana Bengzon also said that the new path of TV5 next year is also directed to addressing their financial losses last year by lessening their over head costs and exploring on diversifying revenue sources. As a result of these measures, the network has terminated all their guaranteed contracts and lets go majority of their talents.
The only artists that remained to have a guaranteed contract with TV5 are actors Derek Ramsay and Jasmine Curtis Smith (for D5 Studio).
Coach Chot Reyes as the new head of TV5 promises to keep on experimenting but will prioritize programs that will be beneficial to TV5, its advertisers and viewers.
