Mentored by theater and concert director Freddie Santos and singer-composer Jeffrey Hidalgo, 10 promising and talented young male heartthrobs finally comes out from the GMA Artist Center dugout to show the world what they got and what they’re made of – ONE UP is now ready to raise the bar!
In a special press conference held at Kuya J’s in Timog Avenue last Thursday (August 11), GMA formally presented to the media Ralf King, Brent Valdez, Yasser Marta, Kevin Sagra, Jay Arcilla, Dave Bornea, Nikki Co, Prince Clemente, Joemarie Nielsen and Arjan Jimenez.
A new band of brothers coming from different reality talent-search competitions and formed to show the entertainment world their unique brand of performances.
According to these ten young studs, ONE UP is designed to be a platform where all of them can hone and showcase their various talents – from singing, dancing and acting – a one-of-a-kind stage for total performers.
ONE UP by definition is a state of being a step ahead of a competitor. In arcades and games, it loosely refers to either an extra man, extra life or an extra power! Or, if we take it from the members’ definition last Thursday, it’s a title that describes their intent to make their talents grow as a way for them to give it back to the one above (and by “above” it means GOD and not GMA Chairman and CEO Atty. Felipe L. Gozon) – hence the name ONE UP.
Well, whatever the interpretation may be, all 10 members are in for the opportunity and the biggest challenge of their lives!
As far as track records are concerned and in terms of longevity and the number of members, the Philippine entertainment scene has never had a ‘successful’ boy group since the time of the VST and Company (1976) and the Hagibis (1979). There have been many attempts that I dare not mention, but none have ever came close to the success of these 70s version of a “Pinoy boy band”.
But the guys are determined to make history – it’s worth the shot! And besides that, ONE UP will be a great opportunity for Pinoy fans to get to know each of them more closely. In a way, the group is like an extension of their previous talent search competitions – now who among these Spogify Pop Star Kids will make it To The Top and leave the crowd Starstruck?
That’s up to them and the fans!
Let’s get to know the ONE UP members more closely:
RALF KING (Kierulf Raboy) is Pop Star Kids Season 2 Grand Winner of 2007 and the Bet Ng Bayan runner-up of 2014. He’s known for his awesome vocal power and would probably function as the group’s vocal lead – but he’s quick to say that the group functions as one. No member is greater or lesser than any other member.
DAVE BORNEA (Chat Bornea) is a finalist of Eat Bulaga’s Mister Pogi in 2012. He also joined Starstruck Season 6 and landed in the Top 18 semi-finalists of the talent search competition.
BRENT VALDEZ, not much is known about this start-up performer except that he was once part of the boy band reality show To The Top. Obviously, he didn’t make it to TOP (the 5-person boy group product of the search) but his talent didn’t go unnoticed. And now he’s with ONE UP.. but he still misses the guys from TOP.
ARJAN JIMENEZ is one of the semi-finalists of Starstruck Season 6.
JOEMARIE NIELSEN is a Starstruck Survivor (Finalist). This half Thai-half Filipino musically-inclined young person came in at 13th place over-all in the competition.
YASSER MARTA is an Eat Bulaga Spogify contest finalist. He then went on to make appearances in the late-night show Walang Tulugan of the Master Showman.
JAY ARCILLA, the nephew of award-winning actor John Arcilla came in at 5th and 6th place together with Arra San Agustin in the season 6 of Starstruck. Before joining Starstruck, Jayjay was first seen in Eat Bulaga’s “That’s My Bae” – he then went on to do series of shows in GMA Network which includes Buena Familia, Little Nanay and Naku Boss Ko.
NIKKI CO is also a Starstruck Semi-finalist. He’s part of the Top 18 semi-finalists.
PRINCE CLEMENTE didn’t make it to the finals of Starstruck season 6 but doors have really opened up for him especially in the modelling industry. Aside from striking a pose, Prince is also an awesome dancer.
KEVIN SAGRA came in at 10th place in Starstruck season 6. He’s a martial arts enthusiast and was elected as having the strongest personality among the ONE UP members. He has the making of a real on-screen and off-screen funny guy. It’s not a far possibility that we’ll be seeing him one of these days as part of the weekend gag show “Bubble Gang”.
The group members are unanimous in saying that what they have in common is their commitment to their craft saying that they all have a serious attitude when it comes to building a career in showbiz – whether by acting, singing or dancing – they promised to give the best performance all the time.
ONE UP is indeed more than a group of good-looking young male persons! But they are good-looking and that’s first-and-foremost their greatest selling point. Talent comes second and what they do with what they have now will determine their future in the industry!
Here are the ONE UP guys on Project Motion Rain exclusives:
Pinoy fans nationwide will be seeing more of the group as they join other Boardwalk ambassadors in mall shows at Bulacan, Dagupan, Laguna, Cebu and Davao from August to November. For MORE Like One Up on FB at www.facebook.com/OneUp2016 and Follow them on Instagram at @oneup2016
