Auditioning for a PETA production was far from their immediate priorities but Kapuso actors Lucho Ayala and Kris Bernal’s experience with the 48 year-old theater company is truly one for the books!
After the rocking success of Rak of Aegis, the Philippine Educational Theater Association or PETA opted to bring back a classic with NOLI AT FILI DEKADA DOS MIL – a socio-political themed theater play that made a very strong statement when it was first shown seven years ago.
Written by Nicanor Tiongson, NOLI AT FILI DEKADA DOS MIL captures the revolutionary philosophies and over all theme of Jose Rizal’s two novels “Noli Me Tangere” and “El Filibusterismo” and transposed it to a more modern setting, a not so distant past and a present that still reflects the same cancer that societies face during the colonial period. That is why, as long as there are injustices and rampant graft and corruption in the government, this stage play will still be as relevant as when the day it was conceived.
During the Kultura Blogcon held two days ago at the Jean’s Manila Restaurant in Roces Avenue, Lucho Ayala together with Kris Bernal shared their experiences in making PETA’s NOLI AT FILI DEKADA DOS MIL.
LUCHO AYALA as Ibarra
I first met Lucho Ayala in 2013 while he was doing Binoy Henyo. The now 23 year-old actor joined the Kapuso network way back in 2010 and has already appeared in many GMA shows and some film projects as well. It was not really a surprise for Lucho to do theaters because he once took up Theater Arts in college before switching to Speech Communication. What’s surprising is WHY ONLY NOW?
But I guess the long wait was worth it since Lucho will be playing the lead role IBARRA/SIMOUN in the play with (take note) no understudy! This was ‘the’ role that multi-discipline theater actor and artist Lex Marcos once held in the 2008 staging of NOLI AT FILI DEKADA DOS MIL.
So I guess, this was like Lucho taking a breather from showbiz and taking in some ‘real’ acting intravenously.
KRIS BERNAL as Maria Clara
Kapuso sweetheart Kris Bernal on the other hand got her theater experience by joining school productions and stage plays. Her being a part of PETA’s NOLI AT FILI DEKADA DOS MIL is like a formal crash course on the Theater Arts. She will be playing the role of a modern day Maria Clara (Clarissa) alternately with theater actress Liza Dino – Seguerra.
Kris admitted that joining the cast of PETA’s Noli at Fili has opened her eyes to a lot of things particularly about the plight of poor Filipinos and the many type of injustices that they face every single day at the hands of some manipulative, vicious and power-hungry individuals.
Kris said that aside from doing Maria Clara, she will also be appearing in the shows as a different character. You’ll have to watch the show to find out – but of course I already know which of the other characters she will be portraying. (TWEET me to find out hehehe)
Set in a small provincial town of Quezon, the play made use of the 2004 Infanta landslide tragedy as an inspiration for the narrative. Incorporates the famous characterization found in Rizal’s two masterpieces like the heroic victim Ibarra and Simoun, the damsel Maria Clara, and the flawed Damaso and Salvi.
NOLI AT FILI DEKADA DOS MIL is directed by Soxie Topacio!
The 2008 production included some of the most respected actors in the Philippines like Bodjie Pascua, Bembol Roco and Robert Sena. For this year’s re-staging Kris Bernal, Lucho Ayala and Liza Dino – Seguerra will carry the show’s banners together with other talented names like Raul Alfonso, Jojo Atienza, Renante Bustamante, Roi Calilong, Buddy Caramat, Mikou David, Eric dela Cruz, Jess Evardone, Rhenwyn Gabalonzo, Gio Gahol, Neomi Gonzales, Joseph Madriaga, Nicole Manlulo, Gie Onida, Kitsi Pagaspas, Joanne Pamintuan, Norbs Portales, Raffy Tejada, Jack Yabut, and many others.
NOLI AT FILI DEKADA DOS MIL will reopen at the PETA Theater Center on September 10 until September 13 and at Springs Production Studios in New Manila on September 18 until September 27. The run will end with a Rizal themed festival entitled, “Sa Aking Mga Kababata: An arts festival on the life and works of Rizal” on September 25 to 27 packed with an exciting line-up of workshops, performances, and lectures that will surely spark the viewer’s passion for nation building.
