Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle is the first Asian President of Caritas Internationalis!

Cardinal Tagle was elected to the highest position of the biggest global Catholic charities network yesterday (May 14) replacing Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga also labeled by Vatican analysts as “vice pope.”  Tagle is now 57 years old and this is his 6th international title under Pope Francis.

Here are Cardinal Tagle’s 5 international positions:

  • Catholic Biblical Federation President
  • Member, Pontifical Council for the Laity
  • Member, Sacred Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Consecrated Life
  • Member, Sacred Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples
  • President-delegate of the Synod of Bishops on the Family

Caritas Internationalis is a confederation of Catholic relief, development and social service organizations operating in more than 200 countries worldwide which includes Caritas Filipinas or CBCP NASSA (National Secretariat For Social Action – Justice and Peace).  Established in November 1897 in Germany, collectively and individually their mission is to work to build a better world, especially for the poor and oppressed.

Caritas-LogoCaritas is latin for charity or love.

The Archdiocese of Manila also has Caritas Manila, the lead Catholic NGO operating in the Philippines with social services and integrated family development programs for the poor and the vulnerable. Cardinal Tagle is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Caritas Manila with Rev. Fr. Anton Pascual as Executive Director.

Also, this church organization should not be confused with Caritas Health Shield, which is a local medical insurance company, not in any way connected with Caritas Filipinas, Caritas Manila or the Catholic church.

Caritas Internationalis elected Tagle in Rome during its 20th general assembly, which runs from May 12 to 17.
