It appears that when you age, you find that gaining weight and getting that extra baggage on the midsection is as effortless as your ability to chew your food but getting rid of it is like YOU battling Ultron in the new Avengers movie.
The problem of gaining extra weight and unwanted bulges starts with food, but it’s actually not the food that makes you fat – you can never take away food or eating ’cause you’ll die, right? So let’s scratch that off from our ‘How To Lose Weight’ brainstorming list. The problem is actually you and your attitude towards the whole eating and gaining weight thing. It’s in the types of food that you choose to eat and how you eat them. Obesity is more than just a genetic imprint, it’s a lifestyle choice.
I was a scrawny kid growing up – a late bloomer. I graduated with a height of a kindergarten. They had to modify my trubenized long sleeve polo for the graduation rites just to fit – it didn’t work quite well. Well anyway, when my height finally caught up with my age – and that was already after high school – I had that problem of ‘gaining’ my desired weight. I was so thin that I decided to join my friends in the gym for a weight gain program until I finally got closer to my ideal weight.
I was okay with a 29 waist line but the past two years was so crazy that I now register at a width of 33 on the measuring tape down at my mid section. This was measured a couple of weeks ago. Imagine, how many pants and shirts on my wardrobe I couldn’t wear any more.
Maybe you’re wondering what happened – well, ‘blogging’ is what happened to me. A lot of online writing projects that made me sit longer in front of my laptop and give up on my afternoon jogging activity. There was also a time when I was drinking more coffee than water and food was more of a stress-reliever than a relief for hunger. The only exercised part of my body are my wrists and fingers.
It was getting a little out of hand, walking up the stairs of an LRT station was becoming more and more of a challenge, and so I have decided to lose some weight, pronto!
There are many types of fitness and weight-loss programs around but most of them requires a lot of time – and time is what I really don’t have right now. So my only choice is to get a little creative and for that to work, I had to arm myself with knowledge.
Warning: The next couple of paragraphs contains some ‘medical’ terms and other sensitive terminologies. Proceed at your own risk.
It Starts With Food
Let’s get it on reverse. As much as it’s a lifestyle problem, weight-gain problems are still rooted with food. So, for a weight-loss program to work, you attack the root of the problem.
How is food and our eating habits contributing to our unwanted extra weights?
Did you know that after eating, it takes about six to eight hours for food to pass through our stomach and small intestine. Food then goes to our large intestine or the colon for further digestion, absorption of water and, finally, elimination of undigested food to you know where. This colon action is an additional 16 hours to the whole digestive process. So roughly, it will take a day to fully digest the food that we are eating. That means, we’ll see all our undigested breakfast meal tomorrow morning on a different bowl.
That’s why it is important that we have a regular daily bowel movement, at least once or twice in one day and no skips.
I am telling you all these, because I have learned that weight gain is actually the direct result of POOR DIGESTION and ELIMINATION.
The inability of our digestive system to properly break down food may lead to inadequate nutrient absorption and a reduction in the elimination of wastes and toxins in the body. This greatly affects our body’s metabolism, lowering the rate at which it burns calories and leading to excess body fat as well as fatigue.
Eating food that are high in fat on a regular basis slows down the digestive processes because these food takes so much longer to break down. Plain and simple, the more fat-rich and high calorie food we eat, the more harder it is for our body to break it or burn down – these unbroken fat are of course stored in our body that leads to weight gain and extra bulges.
Aside from the unwanted physical manifestation of fat in our body, it also makes us vulnerable to various health problems like coronary heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, gout and many others.
There are two ways to help our body work through this, first is to lessen our intake of fat-rich food and second, to make our body’s digestive system more effective by cleaning it regularly.
Fiber in Your Diet
Getting rid of eating fatty food can be really hard but cleaning out our system is as easy as just adding some fiber-rich food in our diet!
Fiber, the indigestible part of plants, improves digestion by helping to push food waste products and toxins through the body for elimination, which in turn aids in weight loss. Fiber-rich food like vegetables, fruits and whole grains acts as nature’s broom for your digestive system. Daily fiber intake depends on your individual needs, current recommendations for women and men between the ages of 19 and 50 are from 25 to 38 grams.
Two weeks ago, I began taking MEGAFIBER a product distributed by PHILUSA Corporation. This all-natural fiber supplement is made from 100% Psyllium Fiber, reputed as nature’s best and most efficient source of natural dietary fiber. One teaspoon of MEGAFIBER has 14 times more fiber than oat bran and other cereals.
The Psyllium in MEGAFIBER is also a natural fat absorber that assist in capturing the fats in food, which are then excreted during regular bowel movement.
MEGAFIBER intake is recommended during breakfast. Personally, I take it 30 minutes before taking in any kind of food because the product also provides a feeling of fullness, so I tend to eat less, which is of course a plus for my weight loss efforts.
I mix one heaping tablespoon of MEGAFIBER in a half-filled glass of water and stir. Psyllium tends to gel in water, so it’s best to stir quickly and drink it immediately before it does. Then, drink a full glass of water to flush it down your system fast. The texture of the fiber is a little odd at first but once you’ve gotten used to it, it’ll be just like drinking milk tea.
Let’s Talk Sh#T
According to research, you’ll find out if you have enough fiber in your diet by looking at what you put in on the toilet bowl before you flush it. Is it a sinker or a floater? A floater is usually a good sign that you have plenty of fiber in your diet.
The Bristol Stool Chart image below may appear to be very unsettling to some but it is important that we know about this so that we can assess our digestive health on our own.
A stool is about 75 percent water. The rest is a fetid combination of fiber, live and dead bacteria, miscellaneous cells and mucus. Fiber tends to bulk up the stool and acts like a glue that keep the stool stuck together, instead of in pieces. Based on the chart, a healthy stool should look like types 3 and 4 – but type 4 should be our main goal.
Aside from assisting in weight management, MEGAFIBER also helps prevent constipation and Irritable Bowel Syndrome, control Diarrhea or Loose Bowel Movement (LBM), reduce the risk of heart diseases and cholesterol and regulate blood sugar levels and uric acid levels.
As far as stool consistency and regularity is concerned – I have already achieved that with the help of MEGAFIBER. So, I know that Psyllium Fiber really works!
My Weight Loss Goal
Losing weight and my midsection love handles are a bit harder than what I thought it would be. One challenge that I faced during my first week on MEGAFIBER is that I can’t seem to stay away from events and activities that are ‘food-related’. I ended up eating more than eating less. Like I said earlier, eating less and taking in fiber-rich food should go hand-in-hand to work.
My second week was a bit better, I wasn’t as active as I used to be and an afternoon jog is still out of the equation so I instead made a couple of changes in my work routine. I added a couple of sessions of Dual Shaper while working to loosen up the fat on my midsection and strengthen my core abdominal muscles. This is supposed to help me score less on the measuring tape.
With just two weeks on MEGAFIBER and less than a week on Dual Shaper, I was able to achieve more than an inch reduction on the midsection when I measured this morning. I was a bit surprised and happy of the result but I am still two pants sizes bigger than from last year.
My goal is to maintain a size 30. I will try to eat less and insert a Tae Bo workout session and an afternoon jog at least once a week next week. I’ve tried the Anti-Gravity Yoga Fitness last Friday and I liked it – I only wish that I have an extra time to do that on a regular basis as well.
MEGAFIBER is available in 7.5g sachets at 10.75 pesos each, travel pack of 30 sachets at 325 pesos, and in bigger 300g jars at 450 pesos. It is also offered in half-kilo family size packs at 705 pesos for even greater savings! Get it at Mercury Drug outlets nationwide.
