With all 52 malls in the Philippines and 6 malls in China, SM Supermall celebrated Earth Hour 2015 last Saturday (March 28) with a simultaneous grand 60-minute ‘switch-off’ from 8:30pm to 9:30pm!
This grand gesture aims to contribute to the global awareness campaign of World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and help inspire people and organizations to make a commitment to embrace sustainable development and tip the balance in favor of Earth, against Climate Change. The campaign also makes a strong statement that the simplest and smallest action (like switching-off electricity for an hour) when done by a lot people, can make an impact of global proportions.
While WWF Philippines led the grand switch off for Earth Hour 2015 last Saturday at the Quezon City Memorial Circle, I was at the SM Mall of Asia Bay Area to witness their participation to this annual event.
SM Supermall Area Marketing Manager Chito Bauzon and Kimly Anaissa Tan Ang of SM Cares explained that the SM Mall of Asia has been a staunch supporter of Earth Hour 2015 since its conception. It’s one of the most awaited annual event this side of the Metro since the Manila bay area always shines brightest with the light coming from the stars and moon when the artificial lights go off.
Although, not all mall lights goes off, Sir Chito and Ms. Kimly said that the mall usually shuts down 50% of the mall’s main lighting including that huge SM Mall of Asia sign on top of the two-story main complex.
Hosted by Eco, the Earth Hour 2015 grand switch-off program at the SM Mall of Asia was opened by SM Supermalls Assistant Vice President Mr. Perkin So followed by a special message from WWF Philippines National Advisory Council Vice Chairman Mr. Lory Tan.
Also joining the program is Mr. Hans Sy, President of SM Prime Holdings, Inc. and four Laguna-based candidates of Miss Philippines Earth 2015 – Rosanna Reniva (Pangil, Laguna), Mira Libiano (San Pedro, Laguna), Alyanna Cagandahan (Santa Cruz, Laguna) and Carla Valderrama (Siniloan, Laguna).
The actual switch-off was facilitated by Steven Tan of SM Supermalls and Mr. Lory Tan of WWF together with the Miss Philippines Earth 2015 candidates.
As the lights goes off, the party started with music courtesy of premier percussion band ‘Brigada’ and performances from the ‘Planet Zip’ poi dancers. As an additional treat to all participants of the SM Mall of Asia Earth Hour 2015 event, Exploreum brought out their powerful telescopes at the bay area for a free ‘star gazing’ activity.
Aside from supporting the Earth Hour campaign of WWF, SM Cares also pioneers sustainability efforts such as ‘Trash For Cash’, water and energy efficiency projects and other programs that goes beyond ‘the hour.’
