This year marks the 30th year anniversary of Steven Spielberg’s (Amblin Entertainment) sci-fi, adventure film Back To The Future which stars Michael J. Fox (as Marty McFly), Christopher Lloyd (Doc Emmet Brown), Lea Thompson (Lorraine Baines) and Thomas Wilson (Biff Tannen).

In the story, Marty McFly traveled from 1985 to 1955 (part 1) then to 2015 (Part 2) and finally to 1885 (part 3).  So basically 2015 (which is this year) is the time where Marty McFly went back to the Future.

Let’s look at what 2015 was like as predicted in Back To The Future Part II.

  • Self-adjusting Baseball Bat
  • Self-adjusting Jacket
  • Self-drying Jacket
  • Automated Gas Service Stations
  • Barcode License Plate
  • Bionic Implants and exo-skeletons
  • Dehydrated Fast Food

  • Hover Boards
  • Holograms
  • Holographic Films

  • Multi-Channel TV Screens
  • Self-Tying Shoes
  • Cosmetic Surgery
  • Scenery Changing Windows
  • Sodas with built-in straws
  • Plastic Soda Bottles

So far, we’ve seen some of these items already realized or being developed like Self-adjusting or automated items (baseball bats soon), semi-automated service stations, barcode license plates (E-Pass), Bionic Implants/Exo Skeletons (in the works), Holograms (we’re almost there), Household Robotics (check), Hoverboards (California company is working on it right now), Multi-Channel Screens (check), Plastic Soda Bottles (yup), Video Phones and Video Glasses are already here.

Another Back To The Future II inspired item is now already coming out. Nike designer Tinker Hatfield said they hope to come out with the Nike MAG with Power Laces this year, the tricked out self-tying shoe he designed for Michael J. Fox’s character Marty McFly in the film.

back to the future

It can be remembered that Nike already released the Nike Air MAG (without Power Laces) on a limited run last 2011.  1,500 Air Mag shoes were auctioned online and proceeds were given to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Disease Research.  A pair went up to $37,000 and more.
