Here in the Philippines and since April, One McKinley Place in BGC Taguig has become the home of Korea’s well-loved Chicken FastFood Restaurant – SMOPER CHICKEN! They have over 800 branches in Korea alone and One Mckinley Place is their first here in the country. Their store in BGC is relatively small for a Fastfood that serves Chicken meals and is sandwiched in between a well-known coffee shop and a convenience store. I would say that the place could accommodate probably around 20-25 customers in one seating.
I was just there last Thursday with some friends and had the chance to taste some of their awesome dishes. I know what most of you would say, ‘Another Chicken Restaurant?… Another Korean Restaurant?’ – well.. yes, but if this one has over 800 branches in one country alone then it must have something that people are craving for so much that it was able to multiply itself that huge. Right?
Let’s go see.
It’s a Chicken Restaurant so of course let’s do chicken. There are many ways to order chicken at SMOPER CHICKEN. You can order fried chicken with a choice of either drumstick, thigh or breast part glazed with the sauce of your choice (original, spicy, soy-garlic, curry, sweet or tukgangjung/sweet-spicy ). Have it at different number of servings as well: Regular (3pcs) for 175 Pesos, Large (5pcs) for 290 Pesos and Family (8pcs) for 460 Pesos only.
Extra sauces will cost you an additional of 30 pesos per shot.
If you’re craving for the wing part, they’ve got that also and I suggest that you have it glazed with their super spicy sauce for that hot buffalo chicken wings feel – order some extra ‘Spicy’ sauce to make it a dynamite! The wings can also be ordered in different quantities: Regular (6pcs) for 175 Pesos, Large (10pcs) for 290 Pesos and Family (16pcs) for only 460 Pesos.
You can tell right away that I really enjoyed their spicy sauce. But I also love the exotic feel of the curry – I thought that it would be spicy also but surprisingly it’s not. The strong flavor of curry was balanced out with a sweet ingredient. Their original sauce is a bit spicy but not as much as their spicy sauce. Kids will love the sweet sauce.
According to owner JIEUN BAE, who moved from Korea to Manila more than five years ago, the sauces are “all from Korea.” Jieun, a Korean national married to a Filipino, adds, “That’s why Smoper Chicken is very unique because you have more choices.”
Just having a quick chicken lunch? They also have combo meals of 1 pc and 2pcs chicken served with either Rice or Fries and your favorite drink. 1pc Chicken combo will cost you 95 Pesos (with Rice) to 125 Pesos (with Fries). While the 2-pc combo will cost you 140 Pesos (with Rice) and 150 Pesos (with Fries).
Also part of their combo meals is their Fish dish – Filleted and fried to perfection. Have it also with either Rice (165 Pesos) or Fries (175 Pesos). Love fries? Have it with a SMOPER Chicken Sandwich (150 Pesos) or the SMOPER Popcorn Chicken (165 Pesos).
The chicken dishes are all delicious and satisfying – but where’s the Korean in all of that? Well, actually the original Chicken dishes being offered in Korea doesn’t have RICE on the menu, so that’s one major thing that the Philippine outlet has incorporated in the store. They have however retain some of the best-selling Korean dishes like the JAPCHAE (noodles), BULGOGI (Beef or Chicken) and the SAMGAK KIMBAP (Tuna or Chicken Rice Triangles).
They also recently added the dishes BIBIMBAP (Mixed Rice Bowls), Maki (Plain or Fried) and Curry Rice. For dessert, try the Korean version of Halo-Halo ‘PATBINGSO’ and some other frozen delights.
Owners said that plans of expansion are on its way and they would eventually have mall-based outlets in the future. But for the meantime, if you want to try out SMOPER CHICKEN, you can visit them at One McKinley Place, 26th St. corner 4th Avenue, Bonifacio Global City in Taguig. They’re open Mondays to Thursdays (from 10am to 10pm), Fridays (from 10am to 11pm) and Saturdays (from 11am to 9pm). For those in the area, SMOPER CHICKEN also delivers, just call 2121212.
