Annaliza Director THEODORE BOBOROL started his career as a creative assistant for Star Cinema’s Research and Concept Development unit. He later was assigned as one of the writers for the TV series Pangako Sa ‘Yo together with Princess and I director Dado Lumibao (then as Main Writer of the Show).
He also became part of Chito Rono’s DEKADA 70 as Script Continuity Supervisor Trainee.
His first directorial job was in 2010 with the TV series Precious Hearts Romance Presents: Martha Cecillia’s KRISTINE.
This year, Direk Theo will bring back to public television the successful and iconic TV drama series of the 80’s, ANNALIZA which will launch ABS CBN’s newest child star ANDREA BRILLANTES playing the title role.
HOW DID YOU END UP DOING ANNALIZA?
I was actually going to do Precious Hearts Romance: Love Is Not Blind, but since the story was shelved because it has certain similarities with that of Kahit Konting Pagtingin, I was made to choose to do another project, either to launch a new teenage love team or launch Andrea in Annaliza. I chose Annaliza.
The Philippine TV landscape is going back to domestic drama. During its development stage, Annaliza was approved on first pitching by management. Nabasa nila yung script at nagustuhan agad nila.
HOW SIMILAR IS THE NEW ANNALIZA TO THE ORIGINAL?
Similar in the sense that it has the same premise, a baby being kidnapped and grows to a different family. This may sound like an unoriginal concept but you have know that Annaliza started the whole kidnapped-baby storyline way back in the 80’s. They were the first to present that idea. We have Direk Gil Soriano as the show’s consultant, he’s the director of the original series and he’s very happy with how the new version has remained faithful to the legacy of the old one.
HOW IS THE NEW SERIES DIFFERENT TO THE ORIGINAL?
Different, because unlike the heavy drama feel of the old series, the new Annaliza is a mixture of lightness and drama. It’s more of a heart-warming story than a tear-jerker. We tried to make all the characters as 3-dimensional. Unlike the old series where it’s plain good versus evil, the new series presents more complex characters and roles. The Annaliza of the new series played by Andrea Brillantes is a perky and bubbly child who loves to cook while Guido played by Zanjoe Marudo is a very different character from the one played by Renato Del Prado in the original series. Just some of the tweeks that we did on the original script.
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE FIRST WEEKS OF ANNALIZA?
We started shooting Annaliza last April 8, and our main set for the first two weeks was at the Navotas Fish Port area. Expect some heavy dramatic scenes during the first 3 episodes as we show some back stories on the Anna Liza series, this is not part of the original 80’s script. Audiences will see what led Stella (Kaye Abad) to kidnap baby Annaliza. I can describe the first episodes as intense melodrama – iyakan galore, mapapatigil ka talaga kung nagluluto o naglalaba ka that time. The introduction of Andrea (as Annaliza) will be the welcoming relief in the first week where you’ll see her dancing ‘sige ikembot’ with Zanjoe (as Guido) her tatay-tatayan in the story.
ANNALIZA premieres Monday (May 27) before TV Patrol in ABS-CBN’s Primetime Bida.
Here are some other things you should know about the new series:
- As a tribute to the original soap and also to actress JULIE VEGA who played the original role, Annaliza was assigned the name Baby JULIE as her real name in the new version.
- Producers and management cried after watching the scene where Annaliza (Andrea) and Guido (Zanjoe) parted ways.
- The new series used CGI animation in re-creating a Navotas flooding incident.
ANNALIZA stars Andrea Brillantes (Annaliza), Zanjoe Marudo (Guido), Denise Laurel (Isabel), Kaye Abad (Stella/Adela), Patrick Garcia (Lazaro) and Carlo Aquino (Makoy). Also in the series are Khalil Ramos, Buboy Garovillo, Ces Quesada, Jean Saburit, Pinky Amador, Johnny Revilla, Sue Ramirez, Kiko Estrada, Shy Carlos, Karen Kaladkaren, Alchris Galura, Gerard Acao, Sunshine Garcia, Kyline Alcantara, Jilian Aguila, Reign Tolentino, John Vincent Servilla, Nathaniel Britt and Peewee O’Hara.
Written by Carmela Abaygar, Jurey Mirafuentes, Margarette Labrador and Pamela Miras. Produced by Direk Ruel Bayani for ABS-CBN.
