Annaliza producer Direk RUEL BAYANI shared some of his thoughts about the remake of one of the most successful and iconic drama series in the 80’s.
Last Thursday (May 23), Direk Ruel sat down with us during meryenda together with the new series’ director Theodore Boborol and rising teleserye princess Andrea Brillantes. Direk Ruel is the Executive In Charge of Production of the new show that he described as a fresh take on the Gil Soriano original.
“It’s a different audience altogether. Yes, it is based on a hit show in the 80’s but to most audience it will be a first time experience –appreciating ANNALIZA as they watch it. We wanted to pay respect to the original creators of the series and its legacy but at the same time, we want the new ANNALIZA to be distinct, to forge its own name and journey. It will take a life of its own, just like a new story.”
Direk Ruel also shared that according to Direk Gil Soriano, the original ending for the 80’s series was that Annaliza, played by Julie Vega then, was suppose to enter a congregation as a nun. The premise was that Annaliza was too pure for the world and that her suffering was a form of martyrdom. And it was a perfect ending for that particular storyline and period in time. However, Direk Ruel said that the old story would not apply to the new world since kids today are very different from the kids 2 or 3 decades ago.
“The kids today are more empowered and adapting. They have more courage and are more resilient. The new Annaliza is more in tune with the new generation. Yung bagong Annaliza, oo iiyak siya pero papahiran niya ang luha niya pagkatapos at gagawa ng paraan para hindi siya maging biktima ng sitwasyon.”
To make the new Annaliza as real as possible, Direk Ruel said that it was shot in real places not in the studios like what they did in the original series.
“Aside from real location shoots, nababagay din sa panahon yung theme ng Annaliza. Kung noon isolated incidence lang ang baby snatching ngayon social issue na siya. We made it a point to present the issue in the series para makapagbigay din ng pananaw tungkol sa bagay na ito. Sa new series ng Annaliza pinaghalo namin ang social issues sa mga personal issues ng mga characters.”
Direk Ruel also made clear that the production and management chose Annaliza to launch ANDREA BRILLANTES as new teleserye princess and not the other way around.
“It’s too much pressure for anyone to believe that she can be the next this and that. They both lived in a different context and time. Iconic na yung pagkakaganap ni Julie Vega sa Annaliza and it is unfair to compare Andrea with her. Andrea is very talented and she will star in many more TV shows and make a name for herself – but for now its Annaliza.”
Direk Ruel as a parting word commended Julie Vega for setting a high standard on being a child star.
“She’s a great example to all the young stars right now, worthy of emulation. Si Julie Vega ay naging mabait at masunurin na bata sa magulang at mabuting kaibigan. Talagang napakataas ang si-net na standard ni Julie para sa lahat dahil hindi niya hinayaang baguhin ng tagumpay ang tunay niyang katauhan.”
ANNA LIZA premieres Monday (May 27) before TV Patrol in ABS-CBN’s Primetime Bida starring Andrea Brillantes (Anna Liza), Zanjoe Marudo (Guido), Denise Laurel (Isabel), Kaye Abad (Stella/Adela), Patrick Garcia (Lazaro) and Carlo Aquino (Makoy).
