His Eminence LUIS ANTONIO G. CARDINAL TAGLE, D.D., Archbishop of Manila, who is also the Chairman of CARITAS MANILA, has issued a pastoral letter encouraging everyone to support Alay Kapwa by giving during special collections for six Sundays from February 17- March 24, 2013.
ALAY KAPWA is the Lenten evangelization-action program since 1975 to raise social consciousness about the plight of the poor. It is also the time of the year designated to raise funds for the social services and programs of the Church for the poor, specifically for its disaster risk reduction and management program.
The funds gathered for six Sundays will be used as emergency and relief funds for crises and calamities both from natural and human causes all over the country. With the Php 7 Million funds raised in last year’s Alay Kapwa, the Church was quick to respond to help the victims of Hanging Habagat and Typhoon Pablo for a total assistance of Php 14.4 Million ( in-cash and in-kind).
Through the Church social action network here and abroad, Caritas Manila recognizes the importance of disaster preparedness and risks mitigation. With Caritas Damayan, Disaster Risk Reduction and Management program, it conducts pre-disaster trainings for its community volunteers.
