JESSA ZARAGOZA is back to the Philippine Music Scene with the release of her latest OPM album PAG WALA NA ANG ULAN.
The Phenomenal Diva JESSA or Richel Ann Loyola in real life is the voice behind a number of the Philippine’s most Iconic hits like Bakit Pa, Di Ba’t Ikaw, Paano Kaya, and Siya Ba Ang Dahilan. Pag Wala Na Ang Ulan is a five-track album that tells some very familiar story that Pinoys all over the country can surely relate to. It is a collection of love stories, snippets of romantic themes delivered in true Jessa fashion.
“Nasaan” which is the first track of the album reunites her with Vehnee Saturno, the man responsible for her biggest hit “Bakit Pa.” It is also the theme song of the GMA soap opera Kung Aagawin Mo Ang Langit which stars Carla Abellana. The title track “Pag Wala Na Ang Ulan” is written by Jimmy Antiporda.
The beautiful music video for Pag Wala Na Ang Ulan directed by Raymond Isaac is currently making waves online after the grand launching of the song last Sunday on Party Pilipinas. I have only but high praises for this video. Here’s the video:
By far, one of the highlights of the album is “Ayoko Na” a song written by husband Dingdong Avanzado. Jessa said that she was the one who suggested the idea of the song to Dingdong saying that she wanted a song that talks about an aching woman brave enough to walk out of a relationship. At that time, she was deeply inspired by the music “Turning Tables” by Adele and wanted to capture the emotion of the song, make it into an original pinoy music and add her own style and flavor. All 5 tracks has a minus one version plus a piano solo of the song “Ayoko Na” as a bonus track.
The other two tracks are “Napatawad Na Kita” and “Buti Na Lang.” Kris Lawrence added the R&B flavor to the song Napatawad Na Kita also written by Jimmy Antiporda while Jessa said that the song that she can actually relate to in her new album is Buti na Lang which she also considers as her theme song for husband Dingdong Avanzado. They’re together for 11 years already and have been blessed with a daughter named Jayda.
Last Wednesday (July 18) a pocket conference was held at TOSH (The Old Spaghetti House) in Timog and rainCHECK along with other bloggers and press people were able to sat down with the OPM icon as she shares her experiences in making the album among other things.
What was the INSPIRATION behind the new album?
“The real Inspiration for coming up with this album is actually my passion for music and my desire to share my music to everyone.”
Are you in any way PRESSURED, knowing that your past albums, most especially the first one “Just Can’t Help Feelin” has produced a number of really good tunes that pinoys loved to sing?
“The truth is, walang pressure. Maligaya na ako na naka-pag release lang ulit ako ng bagong album at i share sa lahat ang songs ko. I appreciate every opportunity. Happy na ako na makita ulit ang face ko sa CD kasi na miss ko yun. But I am really thankful that Pag Wala Na Ang Ulan is currently doing well at naging number 1 na sa ilang radio stations even before we released it.”
Almost all the songs in the album talks about heartache and heartbreak and most of your songs have been about loving and falling out of love. Any ADVICES for those people who are in a relationship right now?
“Hindi madali ang mag-asawa o pumasok sa isang relasyon. Hindi lang dapat puro love – dapat may respect din sa isa’t isa. Pero dapat i acknowledge din na kailangan na merong mas mataas sa inyo. It’s a partnership pero dapat merong role na pilot at meron ding co-pilot.”
Speaking of the song “Ayoko Na,” what was the greatest pain you’ve ever felt in your life that made you almost want to say the word Ayoko Na?
“Yung inakala mo na pareho kayo ng level ng pagmamahal pero hindi pala tapos maglalaho. Ganoon talaga siguro minsan, kaya sabi ko sa mga sisters ko at friends na kapag nagmahal ka, importante din na dapat mahal ka din ng minamahal mo at may respeto.”
How many music videos have you already produced for the album?
“Two, the first one was ‘Pag Wala Na Ang Ulan’ which is already out, the video for “Nasaan” is yet to be released. There have been talks also that GMA will get ‘Pag Wala Na Ang Ulan’ to be a theme song for a korea novela but it’s not yet confirmed.”
Who produced the Album?
“It was a joint project with GMA Records. I was with MCA before but my contract has already expired with the record label and have set out to try working with GMA Records this time.”
Do you miss acting?
“I’ve been a part of ‘KOKAK’ with Sarah Lahbati. I love acting pero ang puso ko talaga ay nasa singing.”
“Mas ‘best friends’ kami ni Dingdong ngayon – we’re not just lovers but we’re best friends. Yung relationship namin ay may pagpapahalaga sa bawat isa at may mutual respect. Malinaw din ang roles namin sa isa’t-isa. Wala pang plan to have another baby and I am enjoying my time with my daughter.”
Why Kris Lawrence?
“Jimmy wanted a touch of RNB in the song “Napatawad Na Kita” and Kris Lawrence was a personal choice. He’s a good friend and a very talented singer. Yung boses n’ya parang palaging naka auto-tuned.”
You are in great shape, would you consider doing a daring cover for a glossy magazine?
“Yung ka-seksihan ko nag pa-fluctuate yan. Minsan sexy, minsan hindi. I am a rice person, umiinit ulo ko pag di ako nakakakain ng kanin. There have been offers pero depende sa style ng shoot. Basta pwede tignan ng anak ko -ok lang siguro.”
Among all your songs, what was your personal favorite?
“I love ‘Paano Kaya’ written by Vehnee Saturno”
Your musical influences and dream collaborations?
“One of my main musical influences was Toni Braxton and I would love to sing together with Michael Bolton.”
“No concert schedule yet but it’s in the works. Also, Dingdong and I might do a Valentines Concert next year.”

Pag Wala Na Ang Ulan fulfills the dreams of her fans and more importantly her own as this album persuasively proves there’s still plenty of lovely tunes from her to show the world. She’s definitely back and in the words of all those present during the interview – Jessa Zaragoza should be considered as one of the real Icons in the Philippine Music Scene.
