One of the most promising young actors today, Alden Richards or Richard Faulkerson Jr. in real life is already showing signs of maturity in his craft as an actor and with his close look at the essentials of fan support and acting where he is earning much deserved praises.
Barely a year after being launched as a GMA Artist Center actor through the shows ALAKDANA and Tween Hearts, Richards was awarded as Amazing Male Newcomer of the 1st Yahoo OMG Awards in 2011 and the Best New Actor of the Golden Screen Awards.
At first glance he may just be another handsome celebrity blessed with a fan base borne out of showbiz love teams. But a deeper analysis to his persona reveals an actor who has found the key to excellence. This level of maturity he showcased on GMA Film’s Critically acclaimed psycho-thriller movie last year “THE ROAD” directed by Yam Laranas where he played the teenage Luis.
This may be the defining character that has put Alden Richards in the hearts and minds of majority pinoy movie-goers. What’s more amazing is the fact that he didn’t go through a workshop to muster the sinister character he needed to portray. His career-defining delivery came naturally.
“This was one of my dream roles and I was very fortunate to be given this role after Tween Academy. It was a different and more serious role from the ones that I used to portray and I’m so happy that I was able to pull it off. It helps when you love the role and you’re passionate in doing it. I just read the script very well and let loose as the character of the young Luis.” Alden recalled.
“Actually, I was not a part of the cast at first. There was never a character of the middle-aged Luis. It was just TJ Trinidad and Renz Valerio who are supposed to play as the young and mature Luis. But production decided to insert a middle character to make the story more fluid. And that’s when I came in.” – Alden
Thank God for that sir Yam Laranas because in my opinion, that middle story was the most powerful of all the scenes in the story. It defined the character of Luis as something that is very dark, sinister and uncontrollable.
What part of the movie was the most difficult?
“The most difficult would be the shaking-off of the character after the cut. It was extremely difficult especially when you have already internalized the character so much. Thanks to Direk Yam because he was there to support me all the way.” – Alden
Are you open to making Indie Films?
“Yes I am. I find it thrilling and exciting to do a film that is outside the ‘mainstream’ perspective to better my craft.” said Alden. ”I am willing to portray any roles, provided that the script is good.” he added.
ONE TRUE LOVE
Now enjoying his first taste of a primetime teleserye lead role, opposite his screen partner Louise Delos Reyes, Alden is embracing the challenge of how he and his love teammate will be able to sustain the chemistry now ongoing between them which has translated to good fan support.
Alden plays Tisoy while Louise acts as Elize in the current GMA-7 hit series where they go about tackling the power of love that bridges people of different status. Proving the show’s great mass appeal and success, One True Love was extended for another five weeks as Alden’s acting is continuously praised by TV critics and the press people.
Will there be another TV series project lined-up for you after One True Love?
“I believe there’s going to be one also within the year, hopefully it’ll be on primetime again with Louise but with a different concept.”
What was your most memorable scene so far in One True Love?
“It was that last goodbye part with louise, memorable because it was my first heavy drama scene. Never in my life had I breakdown and cried in front of a girl to say goodbye. I was never involved in a relationship that I was so passionately in love like the one that I am portraying right now in the series. It was a revelation actually, that somehow I can do things beyond my personal expectations and experiences. Which is good, kasi kaya ko pala.” – Alden
Alden is also known for the good job he did on “Alakdana” and “My Beloved” where he stole scenes as a thief.
MEGA MAGAZINE COVER
Alden was recently cited by Mega magazine as one of the Kapuso network’s new breed of rising talents — a recognition that makes him “proud and overwhelmed.”
“Honestly, we did not expect to win against ABS CBN in Mega Magazine’s cover sales activity. I was already happy being selected as part of the cover with Sarah, Kris and Bella and receiving a good feedback about it. I was surprised when it was announced that we were leading in sales. All credits goes to all the fans!”
After Mega Magazine, Alden Richards will appear on the cover of Total Fitness Magazine plus an interview with him sharing his fitness regimen.
When asked about his top influences as an actor, he dropped the names of Johnny Depp and Dingdong Dantes. He thinks Dingdong has a strong, likable attitude worth-emulating — something he’s been showing, too, on and off camera.
Alden Richards, before landing on a contract with GMA tried joining PBB and Starstruck and was into doing commercials and modelling on print ads.
Was acting really what you wanted to do?
“My mom wanted me to go into showbiz. I told her ‘kung mangyayari, mangyayari’. When my mom died four years agao, that’s when it all started. I began trying out for commercials and artista search shows like PBB and Starstruck and then my big break came when GMA offered me a role in ALAKDANA.” – Alden
“Everything that I am now, I am offering it all to my mom. But I do love what I am doing right now. It’s not for myself, the money or the fame. But you learn soon enough that it’s actually the effect you have on people and on how you inspire them in their lives as an actor or an entertainer.” – Alden
Aside from acting, what can Alden Richards do?
“Host shows.” Alden quickly answered. ”I’ve been hosting programs since grade 6 and I would really love to try doing it on TV.”
Alden ended the interview by thanking all his fans, the ALDENATICS and all the people who have given him recognition. He also said that he’s very happy with GMA right now and all the support that the network is giving him.
