I was at GMA Network last Tuesday noon for the pocket conference of Ben Alves, first thing I’ve noticed about him was the uncanny similarity of his laugh and smile with that of Piolo’s.
Everything was moving fast for this young actor since day one of his arrival here in the Philippines which was just last week. He was already introduced as the newest addition to the Kapuso Network and GMA Artist Center last Sunday at Party Pilipinas and was featured Tuesday morning also at Unang hirit, hours before the conference.
WHY ‘TRIPLE THREAT’?
The young actor, wasn’t sure why he was branded as ‘triple threat’ and said that he was assuming that it has something to do with his love for acting and his studies. GMA Artist Center is presenting Ben Alves as the newest Kapuso heartrob for his mysterious looks, his brawny physique and his awesome smarts.
Speaking of SMARTS, Ben Alves graduated Summa Cum Laude last May 27 at the University of Guam as an English Literature Major – so there’s actually more to Ben than meets the eye. Aside from having good looks, he also possess a wonderful brain to match it.
WHY ENGLISH LITERATURE?
I really admire people who prioritize studies over everything else. This was not the first time Ben Alves got involved in Showbiz – He started with modeling when he was 18. He could’ve easily asked his Tito Piolo to help him with his career but he decided to make it on his own and eventually he did – with a contract from VIVA and two films such as ‘Ang Cute Ng Ina Mo’ and ‘Apat Dapat.’ He goes by the name of Vince Saldana then.
After that brief acting stint, he decided to go back to Guam to finish his studies – which he did and with honors.
“I was never 100% in showbiz then. It was really hard to mix studies and acting. When I came back people I know noticed that I am wearing a different aura - sabi ko, wala na kasing libro sa utak ko.” -Ben said.
I asked him if Literature was his personal choice and he said yes. He loves reading and writing. He took up a business course first but after a semester he decided that the course was not for him. Ben’s favorite literary works are mostly Japanese – he openly said that he admires Japanese literature and films. He said that their literature was kinda’ like himself – very reserved. And acting was his way of letting himself out.
Ben also said that he used to tutor English, and he did this as a part-time job- originally, plans to pursue masteral degrees in writing, comparative analysis and linguistics. His first love really was teaching and it still is.
However, Ben said that he feels so blessed with what is happening in his life and career right now and plans to make the same devotion that he did to his studies with his acting career.
“Someone told me before that for you to become an icon, you have to be good at what you do.” Ben said and he added, “And that is what I intend to do. For me, it was never about the money. I am going to concentrate with my craft and I’ll let the management deal with the business side of what I am doing.”
Benjamin Alves is being managed jointly by Jonas of Mercator and the GMA Artist Center. He was first discovered by Jonas during a modeling stint way back in 2009 but his comeback was sealed just last January. GMA Artist Center offered him with a guaranteed contract that will start with Party Pilipinas and soap operas – He wants to focus on drama and dreaming of portraying various roles from romantic to angst driven to split personalities. His favorite actors are Piolo Pascual, Dennis Trillo and Christopher De Leon.
He is also under a 3-year and 6 Film contract with Regal Films starting with “Guni-Guni” a horror movie opposite one of the most admired actresses of today – Lovi Poe. “It’s really great to work with her, very pretty, professional.”
When asked about what scenes he finds difficult in the movie – he said, “We (with lovi) have a moment there, a romantic scene. That was really interesting – you know, with everyone watching you. Takes some getting used to.”
Aside from Lovi, he dreams to be paired up with Sarah Lahbati, Carla Abellana and Marian Rivera.
“Guni-Guni” is expected to be released this coming August. Another movie he’s doing right now is “Ride to love” this time with Angel Aquino also showing in August.
MORE ABOUT BEN ALVES
Ben Alves is a middle child, he has an older brother and a younger sister. “My sister is the brains of the family, she’s a scholar and a valedictorian” he proudly added.
His father is an accounting executive and his mother who is also an accounting major, works in a doctor’s office.
His first exposure to amateur acting was in high school – he first studied in a public school in Guam and then transferred here in the Philippines to a Catholic School, Jesus Good Shepherd School in Imus, Cavite.
He first started in showbiz way back in 2006 when he was 18 years old. So over-all he’s been around for six years already.
Wait… good looks, brains, God-centered! Oh man, this promising young Kapuso talent is really someone that is really a force to be reckoned with. And in my book – that is really the mark of a Triple Threat! – I hope him well in his chosen career and to grow more as an artist everyday. I pray that he won’t change his present state of mind right now and to stay humble and true to self. Because we all know that fame and fortune has a way of changing every person. So good luck and more blessings!
Ben is now currently doing acting workshops with Mar Delos Reyes and Beverly to improve his craft. Watch out for this young actor takes a hold of the stage every Sunday at Party Pilipinas.
