Did you know that you can get to Rosario, Pasig from Marikina Town Proper with just a single Jeepney ride?
Shawarma is an arab meat preparation, where the meat (beef, lamb, chicken or turkey) is grilled and chopped into small pieces, placed on a Pita Bread and topped with veggies and sauce.
I first discovered this dish way back in the early 2000. We were living in Cainta, Rizal then and I remember seeing Shawarma stalls with its upright grills all over Cainta and then just like wildfire it spread all over the metro.
I love my shawarma super extra hot with or without cheese!
Shawarma stalls has lessen but they have remained resilient with its market share here in the Philippines. I actually once dreamed of owning a shawarma foodcart before but that did not materialized.
It’s been a long time since I last tasted a Shawarma sandwich, so when I received an invite for a Mazza Shawarma store visit – I confirmed my attendance at once without hesitation. And thank God that I did, because Mazza Shawarma although not conveniently located in a popular and easily accessible area like inside a mall, is really a worthwhile experience.
Mazza is a middle eastern term that has a very cloudy definition – which may either mean an “appetizer” or a “smörgåsbord.”
The store is located at Unit 2 Hampton Gardens Arcade, C. Raymundo Ave., Brgy. Maybunga, Pasig City. You can get there easily by riding a Jeepney going to Pasig, Tramo when you are in the Rosario, Pasig area.
We were greeted by owners, Aris Carino (he handles most of the store’s menu) and Karen Dulay (she manages the daily operations). Aris and Karen are not only business partners but they are also a real-life pair.
They just finished culinary school when they decided to open their own Shawarma restaurant last July 2011. Most Persian restaurants they tried are good but lacking on flavor in their beefs. Usually, the cheap Shawarmas offered in the market only use salt and pepper for their seasoning, and maybe some add a negligible, non-detectable amount of spices. This gave them an idea to try out their own recipe of Shawarma. Making use of their friends as happy guinea pigs, they let them evaluate their creation until they were both satisfied with the outcome. This led to a secret recipe that does not scrimp on ingredients; using high-quality beef and an abundant amount of spices making you undergo that Persian experience as you bite into its Pita bread. Furthermore, their special Garlic Sauce should not be undermined. It has a nappe – not too thick, not too thin – consistency that makes you taste that sweet, garlicky flavour in its every drop.
Starting from a single recipe, they developed other menu items such as Beef and Chicken Kebab, Keema and other food items that are equally scrumptious.
The restaurant, can seat up to 28 people including the 9 seats in the smoking area. It offers dine-in, take-out and delivery services (for nearby areas). It is open daily from 11am to 10pm. The store is also WiFi capable which is a very big plus for restaurants nowadays.
Wonderful tasting food that you don’t get to taste everyday at very affordable prices and a cool place to hang out with friends and families. I give this a triple WOW most especially the Shawarma Pizza! I recommend you try it for yourself.
