Last April 20 (Friday), I visited Bo’s Coffee at the 4th Level of SM City North EDSA Annex.
Contrary to the assumptions of many people, Bo’s Coffee is not owned and managed by renowned lay evangelist-entrepreneur-author Bo Sanchez. It just so happened that the inspiration for the whole concept of ‘Bo’s Coffee’ came from a person also with the same first name. – BO
Now that’s two BO’s that gives you a wake-up call – one spiritual, the other mental and physical.
Bo’s Coffee is owned and operated by Coffee Centrale, The Bean Co., Inc. since 1998.
Mr. Steve Benitez, Founder and CEO of Bo’s Coffee
But Bo’s Coffee really started way back in 1994, when Steve D. Benitez, President and CEO of Bo’s Coffee, dreamt of sharing his coffee experience in the United States and Europe to the local market. The dream became a reality on June 28, 1996 when the first store of Bo’s Coffee opened at Ayala Center Cebu, Philippines.
Ayala Center, Cebu
Bo’s Coffee now has 58 outlets strategically located in Metro Manila, Cebu, Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Bacolod, Iloilo, Bohol, Tacloban, Tagaytay, Samar and Zamboanga with its latest branches at:
- Insular Square, Hermag Village, Basak, Mandaue City, Cebu
- Solenad 2, Sta. Rosa-Tagaytay Rd., Nuvali, Sta. Rosa City, Laguna
Now on its 16th year of serving Just Roasted Freshness, Bo’s Coffee has come so far from its humble beginnings as a six-table kiosk in Cebu to being one of the country’s most successful coffee brands.
It was a great afternoon for a coffee and light snack especially when you are with the awesome management team of Bo’s Coffee to give you a heads-up on the latest with the proudly pinoy coffee franchise.
I was with Mr. Jojo Cayabyab (operations manager), Mr. Jancy Seva (Quality Assurance-Luzon), Ms. Ana Benitez (Asst. Marketing Manager), Ms. Anna Francesca Rosales (Marketing officer) and Ms. Joy Anne Reynaldo (of Magnetic North Enterprises).
SOLENAD 2, NUVALI
The whole management team was so proud to announce their recently opened branch in Solenad 2, Nuvali, Sta. Rosa, Laguna.
This branched is nestled right inside the Nuvali community. Nuvali is a destination where people can meet up, go shopping, or just relax. In an avenue where people can embrace nature and savor life, Bo’s Coffee Solenad is definitely a place for quick coffee fixes, meet ups, and unwinding. Customers can enjoy Laguna’s fresh breeze as they sip a cup of brewed coffee, or stroll by the picturesque views of the lake while they drink the sweet concoctions of Froccino Primo.
The fifty sixth (56th) branch shows the big difference from the time when the coffee shop culture was not fully grasped. According to Mr. Cayabyab the branch in Solenad 2 is a total innovation in designs. It is the first Bo’s Coffee shop to embrace a different look far from their dominantly black motif. The Solenad 2 design has lighter earth colors and showcases different mixed-media murals of the scenic views and landmarks in Manila. This new look will spread out eventually to the other branches.
During the official store launch, Bo’s Coffee Nuvali also offered their two latest selections:
(1) Biscotti Amaretto as their Summer beverage – Blended coffee with biscotti and Amaretto syrup topped with whipped cream, dark chocolate drizzle and crushed biscotti sprinkles
(2) Fillet O’ Dory Cream Sandwich – Golden brown, crispy breaded cream dory fish fillet with fresh lettuce in tangy tartar sauce
Bo’s Coffee now has 14 company-owned stores and 5 franchised stores in Metro Manila. They are also planning to open 6 to 7 more branches in Metro Manila this year starting with SM Southmall and Jupiter St., Makati City.
Bo’s Management team was kind enough to answer a few questions while drinking my Biscotti Amaretto and Super Moist Chocolate Cake.
What make’s Bo’s Coffee stand-out from the other coffee shops?
Bo’s Coffee is known for “just-roasted freshness”—its beans, mostly from Cordillera and Bukidnon, are delivered to its stores soon after roasting so that you can enjoy the distinctively bold, roasted flavour of Bo’s. They also make their own cakes and pastries. Embracing its Pinoy roots, Bo’s Coffee also offers Pandesal as part of their menu.
What makes a good tasting coffee?
The taste of the coffee depends on the extraction time. A good coffee requires four elements: Fresh beans, the machines we used, the amount of water and the Barista’s skills.
Why Biscotti Amaretto as a summer offering ?
Bo’s Coffee offers the best Biscotti and it is one way to showcase our biscotti product to our coffee shop visitors this summer. This beverage is a bitter-sweet combination of espresso and non-alcoholic amaretto.
Major marketing activities this year?
What we wanted to do is to increase awareness about Bo’s Coffee in Metro Manila. We are also planning to launch a major campaign this year that has something to do with home grown coffee.
What Bo’s Coffee shops in Metro Manila is the most profitable?
Our Glorietta 5 store is our flagship and the biggest in terms of size. If you look at the number of foot traffic, NAIA branch is the busiest but if you look at the whole business concept, Glorietta 5 is the most active.
What about the price?
Our products are 5 or 10 pesos priced lower from the other major coffee shops.
(Cakes) Cheesecakes, Super Moist Chocolate Cake, (Beverage) White Chocolate Mocha and Oreo.
How much is a Bo’s Coffee franchise?
The total franchise cost ranges from 5.5M to 7M.
Aside from the coffee, cakes and pastries – Bo’s Coffee also sells mugs (priced at 199 – 265) and every time you buy a mug at Bo’s Coffee you also get a short-brewed coffee for free. They also offer for health-buffs their healthy ‘fruits and nuts’ trail mix. Excellent for urban hikers and wanderers like me.
After tasting that Biscotti Amaretto, I’ll be sure to come back to a Bo’s Coffee near our place to order another round or try out their best sellers like the White Choco Mocha instead – hmmm.. I think I’ll go and drop by at their Jupiter branch too once it’s finished so I can take a look at the new store design of Bo’s Coffee because Sta. Rosa is too far from my place. :)
For the meantime, here’s a look at the Bo’s Coffee Shop at the top level of SM City North EDSA Annex:
