I was born and raised with television
When I was very young, we used to have this cabinet type colored TV set with the rotary knob. We moved from place to place but never without a TV set. I love watching foreign shows from the very beginning that I fell in love with the tube. I love watching the mother of all Japanese Anime – VOLTES V and those that followed it like Daimos and Mazinger Z. And who could ever forget Star Rangers? I was always Red One during our afternoon after-school playtime.
I also love watching 80′s shows like Chips, Hawaii 5-O, Charlie’s Angels, The A Team, Knight Rider, Miami Vice and the Cosby Show.
Then 90′s came and college too and with it some more mature TV shows like the X-Files, Millennium, NYPD Blues, Chicago Hope and other wonderful series. The only pinoy show that I never get tired of watching was Eat Bulaga and those night time horror series that I find very amusing than scary.
Work made it difficult for me to go and watch TV series like I used to do. The proliferation of DVD movies also made it difficult for me to look forward to TV shows since I can always get the full season on DVD formats. Somehow, TV have lost its appeal to me but there have been some TV shows on prime time cable TV right now that I would never get tired of watching. Among them are those TV reality game shows and contests. Here are seven TV shows that always had me glued every time I get the chance to see it playing even if it’s a replay.
WIPEOUT is an american reality game show that started on ABC in June 2008. It now has a lot of variation that made it more fun and exciting to watch. But what I love about the show is the funny side comments from american hosts, John Henson and John Anderson and the editing.
HELL’S KITCHEN is an American cooking reality competition that features celebrity chef and the show’s creator Gordon Ramsay of the equally famous cooking show Master Chef. The show first started last May 2005 on FOX. I love the raw fast-paced competitive environment. The cursing and the shouting added a little flavor to the show but what I really love about it was the challenges. Can’t wait for the next season happening this May 2012.
BEAUTY AND THE GEEK is another American reality game show on FOX that pairs beauties and geeks to compete with other pairs. Sky loves watching this show because it’s funny and the challenges are really simple but creative. The show started in 2005. We love watching its Australian version.
AMERICAN BEST DANCE CREW or ABDC is a dance competition show co-produced by American Idol Judge Randy Jackson that made the group Jabbawockeez a household name. The show started in 2008 and produced by Warner for MTV. This show is a showcase of group dance moves. I also love the show, ”So You Think You Can Dance” but ABDC has more groove and creative ideas since each team has more than two members. Would really love to see some more extreme variations on the challenges though.
AMERICAN IDOL is ‘THE’ reality game show! Produced in 2002 by Simon Fuller and Freemantle Media for FOX. This show has produced more Superstars than any other shows in the world. Currently running on season 11 with the Philippines rooting for Jessica Sanchez.
101 WAYS TO LEAVE A GAME SHOW is one crazy reality quiz show that gives you some thrilling ideas on how to get rid of contestants who never made the cut. Produced by Endemol for BBC which started in 2010. Imagine that if you get the wrong answer you get expelled from the game show by being dropped 10 storey down to a pool or tied on top of an airplane. Crazy right? Don’t want to be in that show but I sure love watching it.
THE SING-OFF is my most favorite reality game show that features singing groups competing for the title as the best a cappella group in America. Produced in 2009 by Sony Pictures Television for NBC. I hope to see another season of this show.
So those are my seven favorite reality game shows today. What’s yours?
